We were hoping Newcastle may go back in for French International right-back Mathieu Debuchy in January - but that seems unlikely now, after the Lille defender has said he will not be leaving his French club in the middle of the season.

And with the Frenchman turning 28 years old in July, that could signal the end of Newcastle’s interest in the player, and if we are looking for a right back to potentially replace Danny Simpson this summer – if he leaves as a free agent at the end of his contact – Newcastle will be looking at younger players.

This is what Mathieu said yesterday:

“I will not be leaving the team in the middle of the championship, I don’t like the Winter transfer window.” “In the future you never know what can happen. I prefer not to think about it.”

Newcastle were close to signing Mathieu last summer, and though they had an offer accepted by his French Club – it seems Lille kept moving the goalposts – and the fee kept getting higher, until Newcastle just got sick of the antics of the French club.

It’s a pity we didn’t get Mathieu through the door, because he is a good player and we think he would have done very well on Tyneside, where he would have been joining his best pal – Yohan Cabaye.

It doesn’t look like that will happen now.

That's disappointing as l really liked the look of this player, and as you say with age going against him, it looks like a no goer, shame, but l expect Carr to have some good options up his sleeve.

Have to say that sounds awfully like "I don't fancy that move anymore looking at the table and a possible relegation battle". Fair enough on his part.

Agree with this. I also have doubts about some of the players we have to be up for fight.

Shows the collective failure of our club given that after last seasons achievements we are now involved in a relegation battle.

Players need to man up for this. We can talk about Pardew, coaches, formations etc all day long but the most important component which can influence any team most is the players.

I agree though it is a collective failure so far this year and they ("we" really because we have a part to play too), need to collectively turn it around.

This is sounding ominous WP and l think you maybe right, I fear it won't only be Debuchy that cries off either.

We can forget the previous targets for me. Just my opinion, but players are pretty short term nowadays. Of course two or three positive results can change that in the meantime given the way the table is but I don't think you can switch on form like a light as some seem to think.

I'm a little vexed today as I went out running at 6 am and was unfortunate enough to go down on some ice infront of van mate.

Nasty. Admire your commitment to the fitness though, I bet a few runners and cyclists rolled over and stayed in bed today.

Seriously though, insidefutbol and nufcblog? It may as well be from an Enid Blyton book or the bible, guaranteed to be a work of pure fantasy.

No context to the quotes, doesn't even say when they're from. I still don't think we will, or even should sign him as we have a more pressing need for a first left sided defender in our team, 2 centre halves to replace the equally useless Taylor and Williamson and a quick winger/striker.

All this talk of health food is a load of cobblers, I ended up with a black eye.

Popped into the local bakers yesterday and asked the young girl serving if he had a seeded batch, she smacked me in the eye, told me to p*ss off and proudly announced she was still a virgin.
