We're fast approaching our biggest game since the last play-off campaign and i've looked back on our results in the so-called 'big games'. Leicester City 4-0 Peterbrough United. Ourselves and Peterborough were first and second in the table going into the first big game of the Nigel Pearson era. He got his tactics absolutely spot on and we won at a canter. Alex Tunchev is still rumoured to be keeping Aaron McLean and Craig Mackail-Smith in his pockets to this very day. Leicester City 1-0 Leeds United. The victory that all but sealed our promotion. The game was very, very tense and was sealed by a dramatic late winner by Super Stevie Howard. Southend 0-2 Leicester City. Was never going to be our biggest test of the season but we passed it and were promoted as champions. West Bromwich Albion 3-0 Leicester City. We were blown away in that game and while it was against one of the two runaway promotion candidates, we looked dejected and lost. We were on a terrible streak and clinging on to our playoff dream (sound familiar?) and we didn't come close to winning. However, we went on to win our remaining games. Preston North End 0-1 Leicester City. The game that secured our play off spot. We were missing our talisman, Richie Wellens for what was our biggest game of the season. Leicester City 0-1 Cardiff City. We got our tactics completely wrong in this game. We played with Martyn Waghorn as a lone striker, although in fairness, Fryatt was injured and Howard was suspended. We still played fairly well and Cardiff were ****e, Jay Bothroyd in particular. We ended up giving a silly freekick away and Chris Weale marked the wrong post as Whittingham scored a simple set piece. Cardiff City 2-3 Leicester City. Do or die time for Leicester, we had to attack and we did. Cardiff scored a breakway goal early on and we looked dead and buried before the comback began. We needed 3 goals to go through and we managed it, until Cardiff scored a dubious penalty. Extra time came and went and penalties saw Cardiff go through. Leicester City ?-? Watford.
... afraid the above doesn't calm my nerves much - I'd add in the game against Forest first season back - hammered and didn't seem to know what to do to stem the tide Play-off first leg against Cardiff - AT HOME - playing one up, the very inexperienced Waggy, WTF - Kermorgant was available and was the nest technical forward at the club at the time IMHO - should have gone with 2 up or have played Kermo as the lone striker ... Kermorgant has since shown his worth but Nigel just couldn't see it. Chelsea FA Cup last season - clueless - St Ledger at full back ... suicide squad forwarrrrddddddddddddd ...
There's just been a News Report on Nigel Pearson on BBC Look North. The reporter was at the KC asking fans whether he'd be haled as a hero or villian still should Leicester beat Watford. The vast majority said hero. Hopefully you give 'em a stuffing for us.
You'd be surprised at some who would still think of him as a villain said. "If a Manager leaves Hull City to go to another team who he thinks has a better chance of Promotion and then finishes below us two Seasons in a row will always be a villain in my eyes". That was one...
Surely that would make him a hero? Also, could you mention any 'big game' results you had under Nigel? Games you would describe as must win.
We didn't really have any considerably big games under Nigel as we were mainly mid table with nothing to play for (for a Season and a half). In the local derbies he was quite bad actually, the worst probably being a 1-0 home loss to Scunthorpe and a 4-1 loss away at Leeds. We never beat Leeds under Pearson (which were probably our biggest fixtures).
We beat Scunny 5-1 away (on my birthday, very nicely). That was probably the only standout result from his tenure at Hull.
We beat Scunthorpe 5-1 with him at Leicester. I'm not interested in massive scorelines against weak opposition though. Did you have any games where you thought. "This is a must win game". You might not have done because, like Candy said, you spent most of his tenure in the middle of the table with us.
I can't really recall any 'must-win' games in all honesty. We were flirting with the play offs and then sunk off a bit. Then we improved under him in the 2nd Season, but he left half way through. He never had chance for a 'must-win' game with us.
Nah, there wasn't any 'must win' games with NP here. I honestly can't remember much of his time at Hull - just that match, and a couple of others (beating Watford 3-2 in 93rd min, getting mullered by Leeds 4-1).
Yeah, being a side that spent the entire season in the mid table doesn't leave many 'big' games. I'd personally prefer to be flirting with relegation that mid table obscurity purely on excitement. Can't think of any big games under Sven.
.... the attendance and TV interest might argue differently - and the 6,000 plus travelling foxes that went to the replay ... but as you say,.. Millwall and Birmingham at home this season just shade it ...
Was just a game to test ourselves against one of the best teams in England. Nothing we needed to win. A bit of a glamour tie.
Two wins coming up for Leicester City. NP = one of our best managers ever. Your going to win the play off final. Me and Filey fox celebrating both our teams going up. Iv wanted it All season.. Come on you ULL and the Foxes. Fingers crossed
... each to their own - personally, if my ultimate goal was merely mid-table mediocrity in the Prem, I wouldn't bother going - Millwall got within touching distance of an FA Cup final - indeed it's not that long ago that they were actually in one - that's why I go - I've 'expected' us to win the FA Cup every season since I first went down in the 1969/70 season ... that's the dream for me ... so every Cup game is a 'big game', our away following is always phenomenal in th cup, so I don't think I'm alone ... and that's why I get doubly ****** off when managers treat those travelling thousands with contempt by playing weakened sides ...
