this drives me mad. we clearly have someone who really wants to play for us and after 2 games (and a return of 4 points) he's deemed not good enough. he needs confidence, granted, but this is something the fans can help him get.
I honestly don't understand it. The same people who will say he is too light, will turn around and talk de gea up. He's made a few mistakes no doubt. But to be deemed "not good enough" is laughable.
Most Goalkeepers will peak around 29 years old... Pope is what 21 / 22? Doesn't matter what level you play at, the fact he got York City from relegation candidates to play-offs without barely conceding means he's a talent. Saw one idiot comment on CL saying that his mistake against Huddersfield in the opening stages led to the whole team having an off day, surely his saves that kept us in the game that day should have galvanised them too!!
You've been reading ITTV again Super Agree completely that it's ludicrous to write him off so soon. He made a horrendous mistake against Derby, and a couple more at Huddersfield, but he grew in confidence during that game. He proved at York that he is a good goalkeeper. I think it is worth mentioning that most Charlton fans are behind him (about 35 miles behind him... sorry). And Bob is doing everything to fill him with confidence, giving him bear hugs on the pitch and so on. I've every confidence Pope will be a more than capable goalkeeper for us.
If it was that obvious, it was deliberate FHB, AH etc have said for the last 3 years he is that good. They said the same about Gomez, poyet too. Yado Manbo we choose to ignore.
Anyone got a link for this ITTV forum...? I need to have a shufty at the garbage these numb nuts are spouting...!!
He must be finding it a new experience playing with players like Buyens, TBH and Bikey, who are experienced at a higher level. Since his natural game is extremely vocal (in a positive way) maybe he doesnt have the confidence to bellow in his usual manner at these players. In his defense he's had to deal with some difficult pass-backs as well, from these same players.
The fact he's broken into the team shows he has talent. His mistakes in his first two games shows he suffers from his nerves. I'm happy with the fact he'll get over this as far as regular games go, but I'd suggest he needs to find a way to get on top of those issues, otherwise in a big game he's not going to be the one you want between the posts. But, as others have said, he has plenty of time on his hands. But there's no doubt Henderson will be back in on his return, and he has some points to prove as well.
Reams & his small handful of acolytes on ITTV. Not to be taken seriously, as Paul has a strange obsession with wanting to see our entire squad filled by foreign Network players. He has also regularly abused Poyet, Piggot, Solly, Harriott & Cousins...all of whom have something in common? You have to remember that Paul/Reams idea of Charlton nostalgia is a night watching a Mark Kinsella highlights DVD. #Cardifffan
By the end of the season Popey will be a far better goalkeeper than Henderson.... in the same way that Gomez will be a regular starter at RB or CB? I'm not sure? Anybody who thinks Pope/Gomez will not have very good professional careers are talking out of their rear ends! Perhaps some people want Yohann Thuram back.... after all he must be a good keeper mustn't he? because he did come from the mothership!
By all accounts he had a very good game last night, and seems to be settling down nicely. They were singing his name again, so those who have written him off are in a small minority.
York City manager Nigel Worthington does not share the Reamer's opinion of Nick Pope. What does he know, after 600 professional appearances compared to Paul's none N.W rates Pope so highly he asked their impoverished Board to stump up money to keep him there this season. When I first saw Pope a couple of years back I compared him to Edwin van der Sar. Watch this space.
The ultimate confidence position and people get on his back? Even if he wasn't up to it what good would it do to critisize a 22 year old when there is no alternative? People should not discount the possibility that players read these threads - although if I were a manager or agent I would strenuously advise against!
I have seen a lot more of Pope than many on here and my opinion is that he is going to be a very good Goalkeeper. All he needs is more experience. He will make mistakes but I think he is good enough to be our number one for many years.
Agreed. I just don't see what the argument is about (I don't look at ITTV). We've got a very talented young 'keeper who comes into the team and takes a couple of games to settle down. He's getting good support from the manager and from the fans (the same fans who started singing the Ben Hamer song when Coco was in goal).Who could start an argument there?
It is just that some on ITTV, not all, think that Pope is not good enough. He is a player learning his trade and it is much too early to decide one way or the other. I would also like to say I said a few things about Vol, which I regret. I don't know him and it is unfair to judge him personally on what he posts on a Football forum. I am also pretty fed up with the inter forum aggro. We are all different and just because I choose to post on other forums, including ITTV and CL shouldn't define me. There are a lot of good posters on both Forums and there are also some dickheads, it is rather like a cross section of life.
Couldn't resist having a look at the thread on ITTV. Only Muttley (who used to post on here ages ago) came straight out and said what we both know, which is that Pope is a very good 'keeper with a great future. There was a lot of quite vitriolic condemnation, and I won't be going back there!
