Former Hull City star Nick Barmby will join police officers in a ten-mile sponsored walk in memory of an instrumental fundraiser.

The Tiger's favourite will join officers from Humberside Police to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of Brian Burke.

Mr Burke, who was just 61 when he died in February last year, took part in numerous charity events, despite facing his own battle against the disease, raising more than £10,000 for Macmillan in the process.

He got to know officers after becoming involved in the force's restorative justice campaign, when he met a 13-year-old boy who had stolen a Macmillan collection box.

Now officers have organised another walk in Mr Burke's memory, which will take place on Saturday, October 1.

PC Andy White said: “Brian was an instrumental fundraiser and we have always said his fundraising legacy will continue through us and his family.

“He was such a character and everyone who met him speaks so highly of him.

“When Brian met with the young offender and told him the good work Macmillan did, the young lad wanted to help him raise money, which is when we organised the walk.

“We ended up raising £3,500, but it did not stop there as Brian went on to raise more than £10,000. We want to carry this on his memory."

Fundraisers will set off from Beverley Police Station at 10am on Saturday and follow a route through Dunswell and the Avenues, before finishing at Queen's Gardens in Hull city centre at around 4pm.

Mr Burke's family will also be taking part and will be armed with buckets for people to donate to Macmillan.

PC White said: “We will be stopping off at the Ship Inn in Dunswell at around 12.30pm where the landlord has very kindly offered to supply food for the walkers.

“From there we will carry on through Hull taking in Princes and Newland Avenue before finishing the walk in Queen's Gardens. Toni and Guy hairdressers in Hull city centre and Waitrose will also be supplying us with drinks which will greatly be received."

Anyone interested in taking part in the walk or wanting to sponsor the group can call PC White on 01482 317023.

Is this the first we've heard of Nick? He's almost gone into hiding!

    Good on him though.
