    Sad to see that Nichelle Nichols has died aged 89, especially as I grew up watching repeats of Star Trek as a kid.

    Its hard to think now just how important a figure she was on TV in the 1960s. She was symbol of the civil rights movement in the US as a black woman in a prominent role as an officer on a TV show, took part in the first inter racial kiss seen on TV and worked for NASA as recruiter inspiring women and minorities to work for them.

    Arguably the most important contribution the original series made to society. An icon.
