A generic thread which will be used to post news and views about the next Pompey manager and I shall probably just bump this next time we have to go through this - so give it about a year. News so far: Awford leaves role and favorites for the job are listed as Gary Waddock at 4/1 followed by Darren Ferguson and Harry Redknapp both on 5/1: http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/article/165/9803849/portsmouth-sack-manager-andy-awford Sources link Phil Brown with the vacancy but Brown plays down the possibility and says he focused on his job at his current club: http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/brown-focused-on-southend-1-6689749 Ian Holloway states that he's flattered to be linked with the post but likewise plays down the possibility of taking it: http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/holloway-flattered-by-pompey-link-1-6689500 Harry Redknapp rules himself out of the running: http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/harry-redknapp-rules-out-pompey-return-1-6690520 Shefi Kuqi makes his application for the job public: http://www1.skysports.com/football/...i-applies-for-managers-position-at-portsmouth Nigel Worthington officially announces his interest in the job: http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/worthington-declares-pompey-interest-1-6694655
Bognor Regis manager Jamie Howell has been linked to the vacancy: http://www.bognor.co.uk/sport/local...talk-is-flattering-to-him-and-rocks-1-6694981 That one's a long shot and pretty unlikely in my view.
The average "life-span" of a Portsmouth manager since 1989 is about a year. John Gregory lasted from January 1989 to January 1990, Frank Burrows from January 1990 to March 1991, Alan Ball in his second spell lasted from January 1998 to December 1999, Tony Pulis from January to October 2000, Steve Claridge from October 2000 to February 2001, Graham Rix from February 2001 to March 2002, Velimir Zajec from November 2004 to April 2005, Alain Perrin from April to November 2005, Tony Adams from October 2008 to February 2009, Paul Hart from Feburary to November 2009, Avram Grant from November 2009 to May 2010, Steve Cotterill from June 2010 to November 2011, Micheal Appleton from November 2011 to November 2012, Guy Whittingham from November 2012 to November 2013, Richie Barker from December 2013 to March 2014 and Andy Awford from March 2014 to April 2015. That's 12 months for Gregory, 14 for Burrown, 22 for Ball, 10 for Pulis, 5 for Claridge, 13 for Rix, 5 for Zajec, 7 for Perrain, 4 for Adams, 9 for Hart, 6 for Grant, 17 for Cotterill, 12 for Appleton, 12 for Whittingham, 4 for Barker and 13 for Awford. There have been only three Portsmouth managers since 1989 who have lasted more than two years in the job. They are Jim Smith - who was in charge from June 1991 to February 1995, around 44 months - Terry Fenwick - from August 1995 to January 1998, around 29 months - and Harry Redknapp - from March 2002 to November 2004 in his first spell, around 32 month, and from December 2005 to October 2008 in his second spell, around 37 months. So you'll have to forgive me for being a bit scepticle about any future manager's prospects of lasting all that long.
Well, I can only talk about the managers I've seen Zajec - wasn't he caretaker manager? Perrain - Well, we had no money then, we'd have struggled under anyone and did under Harry until Gaydamak arrived. Would have been interesting to see how he did with more money Adams - Appointed on sentiment and being the cheap option, probably should never have been manager Hart - Appointed because of being the cheap option, never should have been manager Grant - He left of his own accord Cotterill - He left of his own accord Appleton - He left of his own accord Whittingham - Appointed on sentiment, never should have been manager Barker - Appointed because he was a mate of Mark Caitlin, never should have been manager Awford - Appointed on sentiment, never should have been manager So there's a common theme here, appointing people on sentiment and/or because they're cheap. Stop being so sentimental (which is rich coming from me) or going for the cheap option and we may have longer lasting managers.
If we got Worthington I'd be happy with that. Experience counts. Let's get someone in quick before Tranmere sack the poisoned Gnome.
I have contacted the club and sent my CV with a stamp addressed envelope. Please do not think I am joking! If you want to try and challenge me guys send your CV to '[email protected]' as I have, they still won't tell me if Harry's up for it.though........... I have a feeling I may be on their short list..
I got Forest Green Rovers from the Conference to the Championship on Football Manager 13 Handheld. I think I'm more than qualified for the job!
I need to remember all of my promotions I've gotten over time though. I think I got Havant & Waterlooville promoted once, Farnborough once, Aldershot twice and possibly Basingstoke once as well as Forest Green Rovers
I'm pretty sure the next manager will be one who has a lot of experience in leagues 1 and 2 + promotions on his CV.
Why they were appointed or why left the job is besides the point. The point is that we have a high rate of turnover for managers, and Portsmouth managers rarely last more than a year. Given our history I think its perfectly natural to be cynical about this.
I like the look of both Mark Warburton and Uwe Rosler, who have both had recent success as managers of Brentford. They appear tactically adept, and have no previous connections to Portsmouth. Whether we could afford them or not is another question.
Shouldn't you be looking for someone with a proven track record in the Conference? Just to be on the safe side?
Oh, didn't we all laugh - you should be more concerned with your lot losing yet another player - Nathaniel Clyne to Manure - very careless, losing all these players, Channon
Darren Ferguson and Dave Jones have both emerged as candidates for the job while Nigel Adkins and Mark Warburton have been ruled out of the running: http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/duo-join-race-for-pompey-job-1-6696809
Yes, we all sing, "where's all our players gone?" Most games. Actually, selling another player for a fat profit doesn't fill me with dread. It hasn't worked out too badly this season, has it? And yes PM, I was referring to next season, unless you go into Admin again and have a 10 point deduction?
Whoever is the next manager will have their work cut out to turn this bunch of overpaid useless players into a team
