I would like to recommend that fans look at myfootballwriter.com blog on the Newsnow website. The blog heading is "Hughton in or Hughton out?................ The statistics make compelling reading (to me - you might disagree).
Having responded to the article, I'll repeat my response here: Alexander Pope said that we should never judge a work by a part rather than the whole. Dave, like many âoutersâ, is doing precisely that. Letâs concentrate on 2013 so we can ignore the 10 match unbeaten run before that. Managers should be judged on whole seasons, not on cherry picked parts that suit the argument of their detractors (at least Dave didnât resort to the usual ploy of not counting the last two games against WBA and ManCity because they âwere on the beachâ). Yes, City did spend big in the summer (by our standards) but we havenât seen the outcome of that expenditure yet. RvWâs toe injury has prevented that. Hooper has come in after his injury to score at a decent rate for the 12 matches played. Yes, the tonkings at ManCity and Liverpool were embarrassing, but recent tonkings by Spurs and others, like Hull 6 â Fulham 0, show that this can happen to any team. City are 2 points away from the 11th place they finished last season. The truth is that there are at least 10 teams who could go down this season. Personally, I donât think City are going to be one of them. My prediction was for a mid-table finish and I stand by that.
Well said Rick, and as many people have said many times before, if you choose your stats wisely, they can be used to back up any argument.
My Football writer Norwich City is probably the best NCFC site. Most of the stuff on there is well written and sensible. A good antidote to most of the other sites.
We just have to accept we are in the best division in the world here we are only ever going to be mid table at best as over a season we cannot compete with the mega bucks my view is to accept this and enjoy being in the PL, some weeks I get down when we don't give it a go against the teams akin to us but have to accept that the manager is trying to keep us here as the prize is another £60 million next year and he has to be cautious. We fans think we are important and we are but we probably at best contribute less than a third to the coffers as Sky and the club is a business and has to take business decisions which means sometimes the football is not going to be adventurous OTBC , ps the Palace game is going to be very hard anyone who thinks we should go there and get three points is in dream land!
"Lies, damned lies, and statistics" attributed to Mark Twain We all know (if we are honest) that stats can be made to suit any argument. I posted way back in April, that spending "big money" would not buy us better players. The goalposts had moved (with the £50m +) guaranteed to every club. All this created was a false expectation of the ability of the players purchased, based solely on price. Hughton got the players he and his advisors wanted and could afford.Their ability will be shown one way or the other eventually. If we do get shot of Hughton(and his coaching squad etc) there is no one out there any better that we can afford who would come here. Please recognize that there are a lot of clubs and supporters who would welcome Hughton with open arms. Be careful what you wish for!! Remember the dark days of Hamilton/Rioch,Gunny, Roeder,Grant etc.
