Adam Campbell will never be the biggest player on a football field but, in terms of pace and perception, he was head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch as Newcastle Under-18s thrashed their Wearside counterparts in the Academy local derby at Little Benton today. Perhaps “thrashed” is a little unfair on the Mackem youngsters as the game was much closer than the scoreline suggests. Campbell, with three assists and one goal, was the difference between the teams.

Yet the first half gave little indication of what was to come as both sides played attractive inter-passing football but were only able to create half chances. These were either blocked or sent wide. The first clear opening fell to Sunderland in the 36th minute when centre forward Nathan Thomas took the ball around goalkeeper Baird but saw his goal-bound shot cleared off the line by Louis Storey.

It was Newcastle who made the breakthrough three minutes before the interval with a sublime goal. Campbell slipped a beautiful pass through for Ryan McGorrigan who kept his composure to neatly dink the ball over the advancing ‘keeper from inside the area.

Newcastle held this slender lead at the break but it was Sunderland who looked the more determined in the early stages of the second half. They should really have equalised after 57 minutes when Thomas looked a certain scorer only for his effort to deflect off Baird and on to the outside of a Newcastle post.

But the game changed totally after Newcastle increased their lead in the 72nd minute. Campbell did the spadework with some tricky play inside the visitors’ penalty area to set up the chance for Michael Hoganson who tucked the ball away from close range.

It was effectively all over a couple of minutes later when the Toon went three up. It was that man Campbell again, this time with a perfect through ball for JJ Hooper to run on to and coolly net from inside the penalty area.

Adam left the most spectacular goal until last. It was only a minute after the third that he broke from inside his own half to run at the back-tracking Wearside defence. Hooper was up in support but Adam did not need him as he let fly from just inside the Sunderland area and the ball sailed past Lewis King, helpless in the visitors’ goal, to nestle high in the net; 4 – 0, game over.

Don’t sing “The Campbells are Coming” at the Academy of Light. They may panic.

Newcastle: Alex Baird; Alex Nicholson, Michael Riley, Brandon Miele, Remie Streete, Louis Storey, Ryan McGorrigan, Denis Knight, Jonathan Hooper, Adam Campbell, Michael Hoganson.
Subs: 90 mins – Stephen Logan on for Knight
Subs n/u: Lee Toland, Jonathan Mitchell, Ben Sayer, Billy Ions

all good in the hood .....hate ashley but this is the one area i'll always praise the fat bastard for been a toon fan for years now and this is the best youth academy we have had in all that time i've supported them.fills me with excitement like a fat kid in a sweet shop thinking of the potential we have at our disposal.
as for Adam Campbell this says it all

"Although long-regarded inside the club as a massive talent, the flame-haired forward enhanced his reputation at the Manchester United Premier Cup World Finals in the summer of 2010, where he won the tournament's Most Valuable Player award. Previous winners of that prestigious honour include Andres Iniesta, Fernando Torres,Shola Ameobi and Carlos Tevez"

Haha did I just read a sentence comparing Shola in the same light as Iniesta, Torres and Tevez.

I really hope you didn't edit that.
