At first I thought that it was daft, but once I read a bit of the report, which mentions 'Leeds Bradford' as an example, and the fact that Sunderland own quite a bit of it anyway, it's right that it should be renamed as suggested . . . . I'm all for it
If the airport was actually positioned somewhere between Newcastle and Sunderland (Like Leeds/Bradford is) then I would be sympathetic, as its in the completely opposite direction, its a rather sad and pathetic waste of time. Its called Newcastle airport because its near Newcastle
I own shares in Poundland. Doesnt give me the right to lobby a name change to 55pLand. It would totally confuse things for a start, profits would be down etc.....
The argument that its in Newcastle is bullshit. Its in Ponteland. Newcastle Sunderland Airport is a stupid name even with the other precedents. Imo it should be The North Eastern International Airport. And before anyone says it, I don't class boro as the North East so they're irrelevant and not to be included or worried about.
Because many international travellers wouldnt know where Ponteland is. It would cause confusion. Its called Newcastle Airport because its the nearest city. Ive no problem with that. If they changed it to Tyne & Wear Airport, fair enough, but many passengers wont know where Tyne & Wear is. But to add Sunderland onto its name? Why not add Durham as well? Newcastle airport serves County Durham as well?
It was actually called Woolsington Aerodrome originally. Once it became an international airport? Woolsington, wheres that? **** knows! Whats it near? Newcastle. That'll do! Dont see the problem keeping it the same name myself like. I assume alot of airports around the world are not exactly city centre. But they are named after the nearest city. Dont see why the airstrip needs to be on Northumberland Street in order for it to be called Newcastle airport
Didn't some USA pilot land his passenger jet on the East River... If you plan an airport you do not have planes flying in and out over populated areas... eg Heathrow... an historic accident! I used to live in W London, it was awful
Finally, we'll be able to sign some world class players now we can hoy in we have an airport into the negotiations. Jokes aside, you can see from all the developments around the city that's its trying to sort its self out. I can't see nothing wrong with adding Sunderland to the airports name and it can only benefit going forward. imo like.
That's a bollox argument lads Newcastle Airport, has been since it opened deal with it... The RAF had it in ww11 I'm not here for a punch-up btw
