Graeme Bailey is reporting that we're looking to tie up quick deals for both Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow of Nottingham Forest.

He also states that we're likely to loan them back once the deal is done.

Lascalles is 20 and we need bodies in at the back, I don't see the reasoning behind buying and loaning back at this stage. If he was a teenager then perhaps but if we don't think he's good enough to 'do a job' for us in the coming season then I can only hope this signing would have no bearing on what is hopefully a frantic search for a defender to slot straight in!

Quite like the idea of this. I wonder where this leaves the likes of Streete and Good? We really need to add a top notch first choice centre back. Its our first team spine which is most worrying. We can pay for it by offloading Mbiwa and Saylor.

Might be key to any deal - gives Forest a year to replace. Otherwise I agree, Lascalles particularly sounds like a good player. Decent pace and positioning, strong, good in the air and the tackle... Sounds better than Taylor and Mbiwa already!

Quick is certainly the word. They're having medicals with us this afternoon apparently:

Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow due for Newcastle medicals this afternoon. Players will be loaned back to Forest for season.

Was wondering what Obertan, Jonas, Saylor, Cisse and Steve Stone had to do with it.

Strikes me as a bit odd that Darlow, a talent in the Championship, isn't going to be good enough straight away but Rob Eliott, from League One Charlton, is a PL 'keeper.

I don't see an additional year of first team football as a bad thing to be honest. I'm sure there'll be clauses in place for us to recall them if needs be.

They probably think he is better playing in the Championship than watching Krul in the PL. Probably right. Be nice ot have a clause where he could join straight away if Krul gets injured. We can provide a replacement for them...............

No, don't get me wrong, I think this is incredibly positive - we're actually acting like a club with CL aspirations, this is the territory of the "big boys" buying young and keeping them loaned out (the amount of actual Chelsea/Man City players in the World is frightening/disgusting).

Was more berating the fact Pards ever thought Eliott was an acceptable second string 'keeper. It's not even as if Krul is a World beater, it's arguable that we could do even better than him.

I think the loaning back is a positive, both players will play 30+ games at a high level. It'll improve them at a much quicker rate that the odd league cup outing will.

I think all of our youngsters bar Rolando Aarons should be loaned out. Streete, Armstrong, Sutka, Kemen, Bigi, Campbell and maybe Abeid should all have year long loans at Championship clubs if possible. Vuckic and Sammy are no longer kids and should be sold as they won't make the grade.

It says a lot for these two lads that we're after that Forest are so keen to keep them, I dare say most of the names I've listed above wouldn't get a sniff of first team football at Championship level.

Sky Sports News are reporting that the deal is £5million for both players. That is a very low figure and would be insanely good business if these two have as high a potential as is being made out. Forest fans on twitter seem sickened which is always a good sign.

Finances though wasn't it. He cost 150K. We were all aware that at the time budgets were very very tight. Do you spend what little you have on a reserve keeper who hopefully won't play or gamble and keep your money to finance deals like Cabaye/Santon etc who came in at the same time. No brainer from a managers point of view I suppose.

    Perhaps.

Just reading Sky Sports, part of Pardew's quote caught my attention. Not wishing to micro-analyse, but he said "Certainly, offensively we are definitely stronger". Did seem to suggest that we're not quite done yet. I still don't think we're there up front, but I can't see anyone else coming in. We are at least a quality CB (and I mean strong, vocal, threat-from-a-corner CB) short of giving the top 7 a game. But if we picked one up I'd be relatively happy, for now. Can easily see, however, our wide-n-cheap offensive investment not quite working out. Hope to be wrong, but I think Ferreyra is the end of it, at 6'2 he's the hoofball option we were after.

Both good young players. I suspect that Streete and Good will get chances this season but that Lescalles is for next season when Colo and Willo will be out. Price is low because we've given them back for a season which enables them to spent the cash on getting more players in for their Championship challenge.

I agree on this being it for willo and Colo. Seems we have an abundance of youngsters looking to make the jump. Satka looks good but I think good is likely to be the first to see action. What ever happened to mbabu?
