    Fancifully...De Boer.
    Realistically...McClaren.
Who I think...hard to say what Ashley's thinking but I suspect it will be one of McClaren and Carver.

He's either having a serious loss of nerve, at Derby, or playing it crafty and avoiding promotion to get himself out of the club.

I think it's the former tbh, which is starting to make me doubt Sunderland's interest.

De Boer seems too ambitious to tolerate Ashley's selling. I could see him at West Ham next season though.

I agree with you I can't see that being the case. I don't think he should be judged too harshly if they end up in the play offs, there are 5 really good sides going for 2 spaces, I'd say that all of the 5 would have been long promoted by now in most other seasons.

De Boer I think would come to Newcastle, Ajax operate in an incredibly similar way. He's also mentioned us off-the-cuff before when talking about wanting to move to England (along with Liverpool and Spurs who won't be parting with their managers any time soon). The problem is that if he becomes available we would probably drag our heels with him and then someone else would offer him a better job. West Ham would make sense, they want a big name manager to go with the new stadium.

I thought back in January that if we had come out and said we wanted De Boer and would wait until the summer for him then we may have got him to agree to something. I think Newcastle are a good prospect for any manager or footballer who wants to put themselves in the shop window. We can - and I think will - get a good player or two in the summer but it is always with the understanding that they are allowed to move on after a couple of years for a profit. The same applies to managers, especially now Ashley has actually been paid money for Pardew.

It makes more sense to get in a good bet for a manager than to get in a cheap alternative, however his appointments so far...

    Keegan (unemployed: free)
    Kinnear (unemployed: free)
    Shearer (unemployed: free)
Hughton (already at the club: free)
    Pardew (unemployed: free)
Carver (already at the club: free)

Pretty impressive and dies suggest he disagrees with my assessment.

For your sake that's hopefully a huge error of judgement.

If it was deliberate then you could end up with Carver as permanent manager.

I'm sure that would tip a fair few of you over the edge.

Haha cheers Sid, that really was a jaw-dropping appointment.

I can never remember an occasion of every single football fan of a club unanimously agreeing we've appointed a total ****wit. Usually there's some sort of debate or factions of support. With Kinnear that really never happened, it was bizarre. Second time around was no less odd ("judge me by my signings" then proceeding to not actually sign a player for 18 ****ing months - has any other club done that in the history of the Premiership?).

I would be hugely disappointed with Carver but accept that he could actually do worse. Some people still refer to us as a deluded fanbase but aside from a small faction of the fans whose expectations are clearly too high (and I think most clubs have that) I actually think most fans have pretty low expectations. That is sort of the problem and hence the malaise and apathy that runs through the whole set-up.

Thing about that story (I think the player was Ferguson on loan at Birmingham) is that any other person and you'd shrug it off as media BS but with Kinnear you simply know it was true.
