New Royal Ascot race named

    I see its been announced that Royal Ascot’s new race, the Group 1 for 3YO’s over 6 furlongs, will be named the ‘Commonwealth Cup’ – yawn, yawn. Cor blimey how dull is that. The most boring race title since Haydock Park named their Champion Hurdle Trial ‘The Haydock Park Champion Hurdle Trial’.

    I’d have gone for something with a bit of ‘oooooooompf’, a bit of wow and bit of style named in honour of a racing bastion. How about ‘The Henderson Dash’, ‘The Stoute Sprint’ ‘The Ponsonby Scurry’, 'The Waley-Cohen Scamper' or ‘The Cecil Calvary Charge’. Names that inspire rather than send one to sleep!

    Meanwhile, I’m sure that when it comes to the victory presentation they will wheel out some minor Royal who only the most devoutest of military men will ever have heard of. Ascot you have wasted a wonderful opportunity to name the race after a legend and inspire the whole of the racing community. I’ve very disappointed and saddened.

    But what would you have named the new heat???

    I think it is a fabulous name which further embellishes the Royal Meeting and its aura. I understand there will be a further race over 7 furlongs added from 2016 onwards, to be known as "The Digibet Rorke's Drift Apprentice Riders Claiming Stakes"

    Oddy, I think it's about time you and Ron got together and offered up awards for the year. Best tip, article, comp, comment etc. Your "The Digibet Rorke's Drift Apprentice Riders Claiming Stakes" suggestion would get my vote. <laugh>
