http://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport...race_to_succeed_bruce_at_sunderland_1_4020465 If we want a manager as soon as this, talks must have happened before Brucie was sacked.
Pasted the piece for you mate, just to save people time... An interesting read really, esp O'Neill was talking yesterday in London....But who with? Sounds like he is favorite by that.. MARTIN O’Neill and Mark Hughes are locked in a two-man race for the Sunderland manager’s job in the wake of Steve Bruce’s sacking last night. And the Echo understands the club wants a replacement in as soon as possible, preferably in time for Sunday’s important basement battle at Mick McCarthy’s Wolves. In the immediate wake of Bruce’s dismissal, after just two-and-a-half years in charge, Eric Black has been appointed caretaker manager. He is provisionally scheduled to take the club’s pre-match Press conferences on Friday morning and be in the dugout at Molineux. But Sunderland are pressing to have Bruce’s long-term replacement in place in the next 24 hours and in charge of the team in time for match day. A host of names have now been linked with the job, but the club will decide between Hughes and O’Neill as Bruce’s successor. O’Neill was the man that Niall Quinn wanted to take over Sunderland from the first day he took charge of Sunderland. The Drumaville Consortium wanted Roy Keane and eventually got their way after O’Neill pondered the job all summer before finally turning the Wearsiders down. The Irishman is currently in pole position, with the club aware he is the fans’ choice and the obvious practical and romantic appointment. O’Neill’s prickly relationship with Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner in the closing days of his time at Villa Park will not prevent fellow American Ellis Short appointing him as Sunderland boss if the two of them can come to an understanding how to take the Black Cats forward. But Sunderland will not allow themselves to be kept waiting this time. O’Neill either wants the job and wants it now, or Sunderland will switch their attention to Hughes, who is in no doubt that he wants to become the third successive Manchester United hero to take over the management of the club. O’Neill was believed to be in London yesterday to discuss the possibility of succeeding Bruce, while Hughes is set for talks this afternoon, with the club not entertaining at this stage thoughts of any other candidate. Sunderland respect the merits of both men. O’Neill has a glittering CV of achievement, notably at Leicester and Celtic, and an affinity for the North Eastern club he followed as a schoolboy; Hughes has a proven track record of success on modest budgets – something which could be particularly useful with the club’s big spending days seemingly over for the moment. But what is uppermost on the club’s mind is that as soon as it decides which is the right man for the job, they want him in place as soon as possible. Eric Black could have the briefest caretaker reign in the club’s history
MON had a meeting yesterday in London? Bloody hell they ain't hanging around. I wonder if he wore his favorite old Sunderland kit...
Is it true O'Neill was at the Chelsea v Wolves game, heard he was there possibly eyeing up Wolves for our next game
A quick word in Eric Blacks ear, and suddenly Wolves game seems a lot more winable.... Even if he shows his face at the game, the Sunderland army will go barmy....what a lift.
Strangely would prefer his first proper game to be Blackburn, sell out at the Sol the atmosphere will be electric and if we take the lead the roof will come off. Ideal oneill would be appointed tomorrow and will be in the stands watching over his new players. All the players would then be trying to impress the new man.
Sell Out?? I doubt it!! Be good to have the ground full(er) and brimming again though (O'Neil is not my preferred choice but as long as we can get someone in who can get the best out of the side I'll be happy - that is what I have always wanted
If O'Neil takes over and if we beat Wolves..I think the SOL will be a sell out for the blackburn game....lot of if's there
Theres kids deals on for blackburn + new manager i think it'll be 45,000 + whatever they bring. So 45,350
Lets have 45,000 at the Blackburn game and give Martin (if he gets the job) a great reception, and turn this clubs history around, and i hope them players get in and give everything for him.
If we beat Wolves and get MON there will be 44,923 at the SoL for Blackburn. Don't ask me how I know this...
Hughes would be a disaster & O'Neill hasn't managed for a very long time. Any manager in the top 4 English leagues could manage a Rangers or Celtic team successfully so I would disregard his time there.
I really hope it's not MON....... I thought I'd let the dust settle from last night before posting on here because I knew it would be crazy. I'm pleased Bruce has gone and I've been one of the Bruce out mob for 5 months now. MON is not the right appointment for this club. He will do the same as Bruce and Keane and if appointed, FAIL.... We'll be in the same situation in two years time that we're in now. Every club he's been at he's walked away from because he hasn't got what he wants. Spitting the dummy out and running off. I understand he had personal problems but that aside, he's walked. For me I would like Moyes, Hughes or even Gus Poyet. MON is a massive no go...... Anything will be better than Bruce and I just hope we can stay in this league whatever the outcome is. My opinion guys, you have your, I have mine....!!!
If you look on the Sunderland Echo poll for our next manager MON is top so far with 37% and Hughes is on 7% The person in second place is Alan Curbishley on 27% I smell mags!
Just reading the thread out of interest fellas, hope you don't mind. But this post about not MON at any price is just plain stupid!!
