Just reading up about the new iPhones released in the next few weeks, one of which has a fingerprint scanner on the home button.

That does sound good when it comes to replacing passwords or losing your phone, but is this another thing that the NSA and GCHQ will pick up on? Your phone can already say where you are and if your emails, texts are being intercepted then people can certainly know what you are doing.

Now there will be a database of all these fingerprints held by Apple, god knows where. I don't like the idea of it but seeing as a. I never commit any crimes and b. my current phone is coming close to its end I will probably purchase one of these.

the fingerprint data is held in the phone and can't be accessed by any other software other than the software in the fingerprint scanner (i think)

    I've got a year left with the 5 :(

I'm the same, took the contract out September last year.

Looks like we're not missing much with these ones though.

That's what they say though. Imagine cracking into that database.

I've got the 4, contract expired ages ago but just held on to it as it worked fine.

Now the speakers are starting to go on it

    I wouldn't buy it,

1- apple products are utter ****e

2 - of course they will log all finger prints and database them, emails, location, texts are all logged now so that's obvious it will be abused by the state.

but who cares I have nothing to hide therefore am willing to let big corps and government into my private life. I just can't wait for the new smart tvs to listen into my conversations at home and scan and log facial dimensions.

tell ya what when Google come up with a internal chip that I can make calls with, buy shopping etc I'll be the 1st tosser in line for one.

    not.

    £709 for the 64bg model <yikes>

I'm due an upgrade in October. No doubt ****s will still be queuing to get the iphone when I go for my upgrade. I'm a homo for samsung stuff, so considering holding off until the galaxy s5 comes out. I've got the galaxy nexus just now and had no problems with it in 2 years.

I can't see why people buy them sim free myself.

My boss bought the iPhone 5 sim free but he said he rarely uses it to text or make calls

But surely they need a sim card for it to work. Then they still need to pay a contract, or top ups?

I'll be phoning up to say I'm leaving o2 when my contract expires and they'll whip out an improved contract for me. Last time I was told the phone would cost £50 and I would have to pay £50 a month. Told them no, then got offered phone for free with everything unlimited for £30 a month. Suited me as I enjoy sexting and got unlimited picture messages.

    I'm with EE 4GEE plan.

Switched the WiFi off now as the 4G is faster than WiFi.

I'm sure there will be millions of Jobsworths spunking their pants thrice daily until they get their virginal hands on one. Then they'll spend the next 18 months whinging about having to send their Iphone back every couple of months because it's constantly knackered.

Apple products are ok, they do what they do and they do it well. Hugely over priced though. There are other better priced devices that do an equally ok job.

Microsoft recently bought over Nokia so they can deliver cohesive devices. This is a departure from Microsoft's usual philosophy of software is king and hardware is secondary. Basically, they are adopting Apple's device philosophy.

I'm not sure this is a good thing.

Certainly, a manufacturer that provides a cohesive software/hardware solution (e.g. Apple) can deliver good devices. But, this is at the cost of non-generic platforms and will sorely hurt the open software movement.

Do we really want more cliques like Apple?

Personally I think Google has stole the march on all of them by going for the open platform/software route. It's certainly more attractive to independent software developers.
