Now that we have signed Pinto who I would assume is going to be our first choice RB do we need to appoint a new captain. We are clearly looking at purchasing a least one CB and even if we didn't I think Bennett would be first choice ahead of Martin for CB. This leaves Martin as cover at RB and potentially CB. Even if he's not sold to Blackburn or another championship team it appears highly likely that he is going to be in the starting 11 for most games, which in my mind raises 2 questions. a) Should he remain as captain? b) If he does not remain as captain either because he won't feature normally in the starting 11 or because he is sold. Who should be our new captain ?
It's something I've been thinking about too. I think Martin will be a player we keep as an influence around the team. He'll likely get a role more as club captain or something rather than the on pitch captain. He absolutely loves life here, has contributed a huge amount over the last few years and I think he is deserving of a position of respect even if he does now fall down the pecking order. It depends if he wants to play regular football now, or stay at the club. As for who should be the Captain if/when Russ is gone, O'Neill has taken the arm band a few times though I can't see him playing much more than Russ. Howson should definitely be considered. He was Leeds captain and is probably the most regular starter in the team. He's who I'd choose.
Hasn't Tettey been our captain when Marting hasn't been on the pitch? He seems to be a solid fixture and so I would be happy with him.
He has Rob - he seems a more natural leader than Rusty from what I have seen. O Neil has been skipper too hasn't he ?
Surely it has to Grabban- it would spur him on to greatness and at least 10 goals in the second half the season.
It would have to be one of the first names on the team sheet so that really leaves: Rudd, Bass, Brady, Tettey or Howson. Of those I would say Tettey Bah!
Brady would make a good leader, also Tetty. I think Howson looks like he if definitely captain material. I think I'd like Howson to get the nod. I'm hoping we don't sell Martin, so I'd keep him as club captain. Then if he's not in the team, I'd let Howson take the armband.
I think Brady is a shade too young though he has to probably be our first name on the teamsheet these days. Howson is an excellent suggestion and is probably the best suited to it in terms of personality, experience and style, but I just don't think he's quite as much of a sure bet for a starting position compared to Tettey. I think if we extend Howson's contract and he continues to improve he will be our captain in the next couple of years or so and will then be for a while - he's clearly made for the role.
Another reason I say Howson is because he is still young, but experienced. Been at the club a good amount of time, he's English, he comes across as a bright, confident and articulate man. Plus I like a Captain to be either a CB or a CM. Right in the spine.
Oh right? That' not surprising, they like to bring through home grown, give them as much first team games as they can, and give them the responsibility. A lot like our deformed cousins down the road. Well there's another tick in the Howson vote for me
Personally I would like Russ to be the club captain because of his passion for the club and the way he handles himself in terms of professionalism, but if he is not actually playing then it needs to go to an influential player who can truly motivate the team. Howson would be a good shout or as has been said maybe Brady or even Tettey.
Trouble with Tettey is he is suspended one match in 6! I'd give it to Howson and leave Martin as club captain.
Tettey blows hot and cold, when he's good he's very, very good, when he has an off day it's like he's the opponent's 12th man. Therefore IMO he shouldn't be considered at all. Toss up between Brady and Howson for me
