The club have announced that Villas-Boas' number 2 will be our old number 4, Steffen Freund. Apparently this is the end of our coaching appointments. http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/spurs/News/club-announcement-110712.page? Another relatively young coach, but one with experience of English football, this time. Seems like he's mainly worked with youngsters, which seems to be part of the new direction that the club's taking.
I was just thinking maybe I should change my name back. He'll get as big a cheer as anyone when we play West Brom, really pleased we've got him back
Unexpected but a good think I think. I remember that thread (perhaps it was on the old 606 board) where he was picked out in the crowd supporting us against ManU a few seasons back.
A good choice but if he is successful at Tottenham the German national team might come calling in a few years.
One aspect I am pleased about is the bringing in qualified and hopefully innovate coaches as that is in my mind what held back arry and possibly that was due to his own stubbornness. Am happy to judge AVB on what he does for us and not what happened at Chelsea but I'm still not convinced entirely by his appointment and what seems to be "perfect planning" as past experiences tell me things never go to plan with this club. However as for Steffen Freund, I expect him to be methodical in his approach, a thinker and someone that will push the players so nice to see an "Old boy" back, but one that deserves it.
I'm too new to know much about him, but the fact that AVB is reaching out to a player with EPL experience and success in youth coaching in Germany, not to mention being a popular Spurs figure, seem good.
AVB seems to like having an assistant who has played for the club, he did it last year with Di Matteo and now Freund. Hopefully Freund won't be our head coach anytime soon though.
if this happens then 2 things.. 1) he deserves to get the job 2) we will have made some tremendous strides. Well pleased that hes back at the Lane..the guy wore his heart on his sleeve and as a poster has mentioned above..the emphasis is on youth it seems as this is his speciality..which means Levy has thought about the strategy and realised that we will not ever be the type of club to throw money around....therefore we must create some very good players and keep our 20 million per pop firmly in our pockets and use it if and when...good stuff.
Perhaps this will nudge you along, HIAG? "It’s not fair of me to comment on that. I’m not sure of Liverpool’s intentions on Andy Carroll but it’s certainly not a player we are looking for.” You’d like to bring him here? “No, no, no.”
good to hear HIAG......i know i for 1 will be looking at the way we go about things on the pitch more so than the actual results..hard to do as im a nutcase on matchdays as we all are..but ive really convinced myself that this is a long term project and we may not see the fruits for a few seasons...and im quite happy with that.
Good decision on so many levels: 1. Ex-Spurs player with knowledge of the club etc 2. Very popular with all/most fans from his time here and since 3. Good communicator and won't take any nonsense - almost in a Joe Jordan sort of way..... All the above will help AVB as he establishes him with the club, fans and players. Like HIAG above, the positive first steps is a real plus. Bring in the extra new signings and the new season!!
Hands up who knew what Freund has been doing, because I didn't. I think its a odd appointment, but there again most teams around us have odd No.2's, David Platt had as **** a CV as you could get!, Steve Bould was a weird one too. Lets just hope for our sake he doesn't turn out to be the other kind of No.2!! The only thing I can see is the heads up on young German players perhaps, which isn't to be sneered at really.
I'm not at all surprised. He simply is not a Spurs-type player. Carroll is, and always was, a donkey. We all knew that Kenny-boy's days at 'Pool were numbered the minute he signed that transfer.
