Neil Warnock set for talks over January transfer targets

QPR boss Neil Warnock is meeting with chairman Tony Fernandes tomorrow to discuss the players he wants to buy in January as well as many other aspects of the club.

Warnock has made signing a striker and defender his top priority in the new year so that the club not only stays away from a relegation battle but can secure a good finish in their first season back in the top flight.

It is believed QPR tried to sign centre back Sebastian Bassong and forward Nicklas Bendtner on deadline day in August, but the former stayed at Spurs, while the latter joined Sunderland from Arsenal.

Fernandes took over the club with less than two weeks of the summer window remaining and his backing did help secure the signings of experienced Premier League players Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Luke Young, Anton Ferdinand as well as Armand Traore.

Warnock has revealed Fernandes has promised more funds will be available to make significant acquisitions in January and told Standard Sport: "Tony has given me great support and I couldn't wish for more backing from him since he arrived.

"We have already begun talking about what we are going to do in January and have a number of ideas. He is coming to see me to talk about them on Thursday. There are so many things that is a possibility and if I ask for a certain player - the board will support me. At the moment a striker and defender are my two priorities.

"We are looking abroad as well as in this country. We would be silly not too because Tony has all these contacts.

"We haven't got a big enough squad, but we just have to keep going now until January and look to improve again. People should know that we are still in the infancy of what we are trying to do."

QPR take on Blackburn at home on Saturday and the 62-year-old is confident the players will bounce back from their poor performance at Fulham.

The nature of the defeat came as a huge surprise as they had won at Everton and Wolves this season, but Warnock feels it may prove to be a blessing in disguise.

He said: "I think it was a wake up call for us. We are going to get a few drubbings this season, but we need the back four to be injury free.

"We have done well when we have had a steady back four, but it was decimated against Fulham. Traore was suspended so Luke Young had to go left back, Fitz Hall has been playing with a hamstring injury. Everything went wrong.

"It was like we were blase because we had done so well in the previous matches. We just thought it was going to be straight forward. It was bad enough to lose a goal after a few seconds, but we lost our discipline then. It was a good lesson.

"I have been able to work with all the players apart from Traore and Taarabt during the international break. They were just disappointed with what happened but have stepped up training and want to make it up to the fans.

"I will never forget how they supported us at Craven Cottage. We were 6-0 down and they were chanting my name - that never happens. They must realise how much a boost it gave me and the players. It is standard practice when things go wrong you have a go at players and a manager, but they still got behind us.

"We haven't won at home and we have to go all out to beat Blackburn. After this match we play Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City. I am looking forward to those games but it would be perfect to go into that tough schedule with a victory."

The former Sheffield United boss is thinking of making some tactical changes to improve their record at Loftus Road, where they have scored just once so far this term and that was a Richard Dunne own goal in the 1-1 draw to Aston Villa.

Striker Jay Bothroyd has yet to find the net since joining from Cardiff on a free transfer in the summer and Warnock said: "We have been isolating him a little bit and it's a hard job when you're up there on your own. He just has to keep going. Obviously strikers thrive on goals and he needs one to kickstart his season.

"We know we have got limitations and scoring goals is not easy because of the way we play. We are looking at changing tactics before or during a game when we're at home. That doesn't necessarily mean we're playing two up front - it is difficult when you have Taarabt because we have to accommodate him and there are bound to be days when you can't."

That he has to be more consistent or he could be dropped.

Oh that old Terry Wogan wobble ... Overall Taarabt has been our most productive player and still the premiership's top player to have the most shots on target ... More Colin mind games with the media.

I watched the Scotland game last night and the Spaniards had a really good player, David someone, looked sharp and had a good finish on him too. Poor sod plays from some up North team so I'm sure he'd love to move to London. Got to be worth about £100k though but I'm sure our new rich owners can stretch to it.

    <doh>

Seeing as the idea of the game is to score goals then maybe we should have been playing a different way from the outset!

Neil: "Doctor, doctor, every time I ram my finger in my eye it hurts like hell. What shall I do?"

Doctor: "Stop ramming your finger in your eye".

Sorry, I find Neil's comment absolutely ridiculous. He is the one who dictates the way we play FFS.

I think NW is looking gaunt and maybe should nip off to see his GP. I agree he is talking like a wild man of late. We should monitor this ... have mentioned this on other threads but is he playing the media ... at times he shows a daft way of connecting to them as he slips back into Yorkshire Brass Mode here and there ... Is he well?
Recently having overheard someone say "F**K Me" under his breath he quickly snapped back " Not while there's dogs on the street" ... When asked about nutrition his answer was "You can't beat a slice of Hovis with Mother's Jam". When asked about having a break " I'm off to TORKRY " when pressed if he was flying with EasyJet he replied "Don't be a dope lad its straight down A380 off the A38 just past Exeter, Torquay. ... I'm here all week
