In an increasingly uncertain world where the risk of global military conflict seems to rise every day, is it time for us to seriously consider bringing back compulsory National Service? please log in to view this image
I'd be very much in favour of forcing Jeremy Corbyn to fist himself into a coma. The likelihood of war diminishes when we provide those levels of comedy to the people, go on Jezza do yourself a favour and kill yourself for the many.
Being as I’m too old to get called up im definitely in favour of it. Make all these young hoodlams learn some manners and die in the process. Means more birds for us old bastards
I'd bring back national service. Either 1 year in the Forces, or 18 months in the NHS, and the young person can choose which. I'd also specify that if you joined the forces, you would be excluded from any military campaigns. But that you would be involved in civil support jobs, so that you could learn a trade and skills as well as learning the discipline that goes with working as part of a team for a bigger cause. I'd also build in some exclusions for exceptional talents in sporting, engineering and scientific fields. Some people just need to be fast tracked into their careers if they've got a shining talent. But for 95% of young people, I think it would give them the basis for a sound platform to build upon some key skills.
1 year sounds ok, but reserve the right to extend the service as punishment for certain infractions. Make the bastards toe the line or else.
or they could buy themselves out, what price shall we say, five grand, we could have a big red bus saying how it would help fund the NHS.
I think a reward system would work better. So more privileges if you complete your work with distinction and maybe a financial reward at the end. If you **** about and don't bother then you have to do the menial jobs and you get **** all at the end. The only scenario for extending somebody's service should be for unauthorised non attendance. People work better for rewards, rather than fear of punishment.
We were bound to disagree on this as I am vehemently against the nanny state and pandering to slackers. That said, a little carrot and large stick could be a good combo.
I had a friend that was a Turk-Cypriot, couldn't go back home because he didn't do his NS, eventually he had to buy himself out, so he could go back and visit his family.
If you just punish kids for not engaging, then you'll just create adults who resent the system for punishing them (even if you think they deserve it) and then you've lost them. Far better to offer incentives for good work/behaviour so that people get rewarded for their efforts.
I don't propose forcing kids into NS, only adults. Being an adult has certain privileges, but it also means being responsible for your actions. Spare the rod..........
