Well its still a bit to go towards the start of the new season, but a pattern is now emerging...GT is trying to build a team for the future, by looking at the signings he has made so far, this team will not be pushing for promotion but integrating itself in this league, it obvious that Rowland doesn't like spending to much on wages or players and heaps far to much on GT's great experience for getting good acquisitions on the cheap, I think this season will be a so-so season with more emphasis being placed on stability rather than promotion chasing, all well and good, but to do that we need to keep our fickle fans from not deserting us, other wise we will be oozing revenue. If we do need to go down this route like a lot of other clubs do, we need to invest more in our youth policy like Crewe and Wrexham, and be able to sell younger players on for income towards rebuilding our first team, you cant keep a successful team going for long without the mixture of youth and experience, and you definitely cant rely on journey men to keep this club stable and the fans enthusiastic......any thoughts?
I would not of expected a promotion again this season, I assume there will be a 'hollow goal' of getting into the play-offs for the team to aim at whilst really it will really be a goal to avoid relegation at the first attempt. We have signed some good players and the general mood over the signings seems to be a relieved sigh of appreciation at who has come in. Time will tell how well they play over this season, but as long as the fans don't get on the teams back when we lose two in a row and keep cheering them on then we have a good chance of an enjoyable season.
Good job we ain't signed a 35yr old journeyman on a two year contract, innit! Personally, I'm very pleased with our signings to date, but then what do I know?
I agree. I have not panicked at any point; I am too much of a slow moving, lazy sloth to do so in all honesty. I maintain that all of our signings have been good - the likes of Purdie and Anyon are excellent back ups. I also rate Connor Goldson (who I've met a lot around the place, seems a nice lad) and Tom Bradshaw very highly and I believe they will play a bigger part in this forthcoming season than the previous season. I don't agree that we're not necessarily spending on wages - one only has to go through our squad and think of the players' pedigree to realise some of the existing members are probably on decent contracts. The likes of Richards and Hazell were first team regulars at their clubs in League One and came to us. One could only presume wages are involved there. Parry and Weale will have been on Championship wages, and Summerfield and Hall both had their contract offers from their clubs raised but still beaten by our offers. I think Turner sacrifices paying extortionate transfer fees for a little more room for manoeuvre in the wage department, so signs out of contract players.
Some people would appear to think that only players signed on a fee, are considered good enough & those that come on a free, aren't.
sounds as though we wll be losing el tel, but gt is to be praised for rebuilding the squad on a shrewstring, and as for youth, next years annual figures should include £250k for a youth goalkeeper sold to everton. that should buy roland a few cases of tanners vintage port. a small amount of the 250k may trickle down to gt, but more likely trickle down rolands chin. i remain confident about shrews chances this season, they may not win promo but i believe a few large sharks may be reduced to minnows when they visit the meadow. a good idea of how well the shrews will do this season is how we perform at leeds. a draw and i will do a rain dance, sadly someone has already beaten me to it in deepest sodden sodding devon. it is absolutely hammering down here as i write this load of old tom tit. floreat salopia. oh and i hear bradders has cost us an extra 30k, as a tribunal has awarded aberystwyth 30k. amwythig am byth!
AJ why do you say we are we losing Gornell? There are only rumours eminating from B&A and Football-Rumours.co.uk and neither are reliable, especially the rumours one.
i read 2 sources on b and a. 1 is careless talk, 2nd source may indicate a little smoke. i hope we do keep him. as for shrews panicking, i was not aware we did that unlike the quivering mass of a chivers jelly dow they wobblers. john terry is innocent!
no we are definitely not panicking, but the more successful sides keep their promotion winning team together then add too to push on even further, unfortunately the better players of our team have moved on to pastures new so it will be a learning season i think, ill be happy if we are over half way come the end of the campaign. but never underestimate GT...
