Daryl Murphy has entered the pantheon of all time Ipswich Goal Getters after scoring his 20th & 21st of the season on Saturday. Murphy is now the 11th Town player to have notched 20+ goals in the league in a season and joins the illustrious Ray Crawford, Ted Phillips, John Wark & Alan Brazil, A big well done to Murphy who is now a true Ipswich great. Murphy is the 11th Blues player to have scored 20 league goals in a season since Town joined the Football League, following Bill Jennings (1948/49 - 23), Sam McCrory (1950/51 - 21), Tom Garneys (1954/55 - 20), Tommy Parker (1955/56 - 30), Ted Phillips (1956/57 - 41, 1959/60 - 24, 1960/61 - 30, 1961/62 - 28), Ray Crawford (1958/59 - 24, 1960/61 - 40, 1961/62 - 33, 1962/63 - 25, 1966/67 - 21), Alan Brazil (1981/82 - 22), John Wark (1982/83 - 20), Kevin Wilson (1986/87 - 20) and David Johnson (1997/98 - 20, 1999/00 - 22).
What a crock of ****, a legend is not someone who does well one season!! A legend is someone who us consistantly great over many seasons!! Nowadays the word legend is used far too frequently, sorry Warky, Murphy has had a great season but a legend he is not, imo!!
Well he's one of only a certain amount of players who have scored a certain amount in a season!? My three fav players to put on a town shirt - Matty Holland Gio Kuqi Holland and Kuqi are absolute legends in my eyes!
Judging on the basis of the criteria above Murphy has achieved something that only a very select few have and has achieved something that not even the great Paul Mariner, Trevor Whymark et al did not manage!
Spanish of the last 15 years Kuqi is right up there legend wise he'd run through walls for us. Ability? NONE. Passion/ workrate/ everything else? Bucketloads.
Those boys were in the top division Warky, had they been in div 2 they would have probably got 40 each!!
Agreed, this is one of those that would really divide people, like Westy and his Kuqi views, i should imagine he wouldnt make your top 60 either but then you have been following Town since the 50's and therefore have seen many more players
I always have reservations referring so highly to current athletes as 'legends' It's not until they have left, retired etc. that I feel comfortable looking back on their time as being legendary... I use the same philosophy for any athlete across all sports. David Beckham being an example of appreciating the impact after his playing career ended. Bradley Wiggins, Thierry Henry and Steve Redgrave are examples of the athletes I would consider legends during their careers.
Since the 1970s dear boy! My favorite player ever must be Colin Viljoen as it goes! Now there was real Quality!
Warky, i only saw him for a few seasons and honestly struggle to remember that far back!! I started going in 1975 and have been fortunate enough to see some top top players!! My hero and fav player was Paul Cooper but he certainly was not the best player, altho i think he is still the best keeper we have ever had!!
The truth is we were spoilt for choice back in those days weren't we! I loved Trevor Whymark he was the best header of a ball I have ever seen and that includes the likes of Beats and Mariner! I also loved Eric Gates he was just phenomenal the Mighty Mouse! We will never see a team as good as that again I'm afraid so I cherish the memories.
For me Warky its all relative, i think Marcus Stewart's goals in the prem were a bigger achievement than Murphs in the championship, even tho Murph has scored more!!
