Breaking news: there's going to be a vote in Parliament this Wednesday on Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB power grab. Your MP will be weighing up how to vote. Will they stand up for democracy and decent media standards? Or will they do what they've done far too many times in the past, and let Murdoch grab even more power? If we work together, we can make sure enough MPs vote the right way this Wednesday. We can send our MPs a flood of messages, and make them realise their voters won't stand for Rupert Murdoch getting even more control. It's quick and easy to email your MP, and it only takes 2 minutes. Get started here: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/stand-up-to-murdoch A vote by our MPs to halt the BSkyB deal would be a huge breakthrough. The past week has seen appalling revelations of criminal and unethical activity by Murdoch papers. Now we have a chance to prove that Murdochâs control over our democracy will no longer be tolerated. It could be a very close vote. Rupert Murdoch knows that control of BSkyB would mean more cash and more power - so he's desperate to win. Heâs flown into London to start twisting arms. Behind closed doors, his lobbyists and lawyers are springing into action. But if enough of us work together, we can outweigh their pressure. Can you send your MP a quick message now? Find their name and email address here: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/stand-up-to-murdoch
i agree with what your saying man, but realistically, no-one can really stand up to the old ****. Anyone stands against him and you can gaurentee there will be a smear campaign against them come time to re-elect
I'll be letting my MP know that I am thankful for Murdochs media empire and be telling them to vote for the takeover.
This Politicians can be made or broken by the Murdoch empire and they will not risk not being reelected by standing against THE major media power broker
But that's not necessarily true under the current climate. Do you think Milliband would be making such bold statements if he didn't think the Murdoch empire was in trouble? You'd be surprised how much most politicians listen. Sadly, due to the actions of a few arseholes, politicians get a bad name and people become cynical and sceptical about them but most of them are decent men and women.
It's the exact same when it comes to the weed begin legal debate. Heaps of MP's always spout ****e about it not being bad and as soon as they are elected their stance changes as the dont want to go against what the bigger powers think. Cowards, the lot of them
Will this takeover have any real effect on my life though? I'm pretty insular to be honest and tend not to care about stuff that doesn't impact on me or my family.
I agree with that - in times gone by it was true that Politicians would be terrified of having stuff published about them. After what happened last week who on earth is going to believe what is published by News International? MPs now have the ability to speak up again because Murdoch has zero credibility with large swathes of the British public.
It might not seem like it but when you look at the bigger picture and see how much Murdoch influenced Governments from Thatcher onwards it does impact greatly on your life, from decisions about this country going to war to economic and social policies at home.
Not at all surprised. The lack of condemnation from certain papers is telling. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it goes beyond Murdoch's papers into others such as the Daily Mail.
This. You only have to watch Fox News for five minutes, or any of the many clips to be found on Youtube, to realise that Murdoch is a political demogogue who uses his media to spout right wing propaganda. Fox is incapabe of acting as an unbiased news service. Do you want Sky to go the same way? If you don't speak out now it will be too late to doing anything later.
