Yet five goals would be enough to give both Basel and CSKA a better GD than United.

Ok I get it now - it's not the same as the Premier League. If United, Basel and CSKA are tied on points it goes to GD in matches specifically involving those three teams (matches against Benfica would be discounted).

When the GD is recalculated it means we could lose by six and still finish ahead of Basel on goals scored. However, if we lost by five then CSKA would finish top with United second place.

All pointless and over-complicated but good to know

 

I know it's on head to head and not straight up goal difference, didn't know it would become a three team round robin.

Not really. Beat a team which we could have afforded to lose 4-0 to get top place and 6-0 to go through.
