I'm far from convinced he is the best man for the England managers job If you were in charge of the FA who would you appoint? It can be one man or a manager and assistant. I think if he would take the job I would have offered it to Sir Fergie.
We should beat teams like Ireland, we drew! Tonights game suited Roy, we drew! Roy's teams are boring to watch, its negative 'clean shhet first' football. As much as I think England need to be more realistic with their aims, they also need to at least match their abilities!
If I could have anyone it would be Wenger. Its the type of manager we need. We would be watching a confident full flowing England and we have the players to play that way we just don't have the manager.
Great managers like Fergie, Morinino and Wenger like to mould players into their way of thinking and playing. International managers don't get the luxury of time or the ability to buy players when a weak position is evident in the set up. Arry would of been rubbish he likes to buy teams, he had a bunch of good players at QPR and didn't save them. International managers can only play the hand they are dealt with, club managers can choose the hand. As I said in this country the press pick the team, they run readers votes etc. And totally rubbish the manager if he don't agree with what they are saying. You drew against the Irish and Brazil, the Irish ain't a bad team but Brazil is a good result and over there is a fantastic result. Enjoy it
When i was young, playing for England was the heights- Today, it is not- Players are more interested in the Champions League and with the amount of money involved, it is easy to see why clubs dont want to have their star players overused- Wasnt it Ryan Giggs who held some kind of record for never having appeared in a friendly for Wales??For a long time it was at least. Forget the rankings, England are not in the top 10- The Quarter finals of a major championship seem to be achievement for us and we are light years away from winning one- Hodgson was put there as a safe choice where I and a lot of others felt Harry Redknapp to be the obvious one at the time-A it like they would never give the job to Brian Clough and with the safe choice comes safe results-Lots of draws but England are hardly pulling up trees.
The current manager is doing fine with what he has. He is pampering over the cracks of a lack of quality. Odd one or two out injured will change but not much. England are hanging on in the upper levels of football. The players simply lack technique it's three and four touches instead of one or none slow instead of swift. The under 21's on the whole are the same. All points back to coaching and the way the game is ran and football here is ran by money.
To be honest, anyone could pick an England team, me I couldn't give a flying fk about England & haven't done for a long while, however when there was a mention of Harry Redknapp getting the job, I got all enthusiastic and interested again, I think he would of bought back to English football that bit of belief and unity that seems to have been missing for a real long time. Redknapp & Joe for me..
Our first touch is generally awful, we give the ball away so often. Our so called best player only did one thing of any note during both games and that was via a deflection. I don't know how Johnson gets in the side?? (Que all the Liverpool fans saying he's great!!) I could go on, but I have said it all before on numerous occasions. this lot have no desire for the shirt and find it way too heavy hanging on them, the manager is just doing his best with the crap he has been given. I would like to see more kids begin to be integrated in to side though, look what happened when Chamberlain came on last night, no fear!! Shame he's not playing more regularly. I am beginning to fear qualification with this lot, one bad result now could really damage us.. The u21's does look a better prospect to me but I think with the next batch through after them we will begin to see the changes that have been implemented with coaching techniques.
Standards are improving below academy levels but England is backward as far as coaching goes. There is no obvious national strategy to improve the odds of producing better players. There are schools like brazillian Socceroos schools, first football steps and others but these are paid for by parents. Abroad coaching is free and coaches are numerous. France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain have structures put in place long term with clear aims, backed by extensive coaching starting at infant school level. England makes it up as it goes along.
I still think a lot of the problem goes back to the manager he has always been a defensive minded person 'we start off with a point lets try and keep it' and hope we can nick something. We have appointed foreign managers in the past but usually they were ones who had been seen to put teams out who played the British way,(whatever that is as England, Scotland, Wales and the two Irelands play slightly different styles), That was something I heard an old duffer on the FA board say. Our players play at clubs who do NOT stick to 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 so how come when they play for England they play in that fashion it has to be that is what they are told to do and that comes from the manager. I can not see any improvement in the future with RH in charge he will continue with what he has done throughout his management life try and play safe.
The manager can only coach what he had. England. England have played various formations. Five in a midfield last night and "passers " like Carrick could not retain possession. Football has passed on. Formations fit players.Germany play heigh tempo at times, one and two upfront, even a big man, but it is allied to techniqe. Spain a fluid rotation minus forwards allied to technique. Italy a conservative pressing game allied to ? England struggle to do basics, pressure the football it goes long. Simply sub standard players.
To be fair to Hodgeson he does not have a big pool of quality players to pick from Against Brazil he changed the system when we went behind and it worked - something Erikson and Capello seem to never do
This will get a lot of hate from people on here, but I'd pick Holloway if I had to pick a manager. His teams play decent football and he can have a laugh at his (and his teams) expense. It would be a refreshing change to see someone laugh off the press instead of getting hounded by them.
