What are the duties of a football captain? I would say that he is the managers representative on the field of play and that he should make sure the players do as he instructs.

I have noticed that the manager of “this football club” has gone very quiet. Statements to the press have been made by the Chairman and not to manager. Now Ryan has said his piece and he blames the players. Now if he is blaming his players, he has to take responsibility himself for reasons I have already given.

Mr Pulis should allow him to do his job instead if acting like an excitable chimpanzee in his technical area and Mr Coates should be overseeing that matters are dealt with in a proper manner. So for all these seasons I blame Ryan-Mr Coates and Mr Pulis for the present situation.

Why blame Shawcross? He is the captain and he is entitled to give his opinion on reasons why he thinks the team has not been performing well of late. The players may bear some of the responsibility for the recent decline especially if they have suffered a dip in form but Pulis picks the team and decides the tactics to be employed.

Things are a concern to the fans at the moment and at least Coates and Shawcross aware of those concerns.

My criticism of Ryan is limited. I save my main criticism for Pulis, but Ryan is the captain and should dictate what goes on, on the field. He does that to some extent but we still have the manager balling instructions from the side line. Pulis is not allowing his captain to do his job. If Pulis shouts new instructions from the side line why have a captain.

It always seems to me that Huth is the captain, although Ryan wears the arm band. Shawcross does all the official stuff, coin toss etc, but during the game Huth seems to be the one barking orders and organizing. Maybe he doesn't get the band because of his violent conduct that we keep seeing, or maybe I'm wrong and Ryan is doing his job, but Huth has a louder voice or something.

Ryan does his fair share of giving orders but whether his teammates are listening to him may be a different matter.

Can somebody answer my question in my original post and tell me what the duties of the captain are please.

I have a lot of time for Ryan but if he is being ignored, then maybe we should ask the question why

    Moels,
I remember Michael Ballack saying that it is only in this country that the word 'captain' has any significance ON the pitch, on the Continent it is usually the strongest leader who automatically takes charge. Here we have a figurehead, at some clubs you have a Team Captain and a Club Captain, the CC is sometimes not in the team.

It is a little confusing, but in reality at Stoke at the moment it does not really matter who is nominated captain, it is that lunatic on the sidelines who is shouting the odds. Perhaps Captain Scarlett would do the trick!
