dont think im on the WUM as im a Liverpool fan but this is what Moyes had to say, -------------------------------- David Moyes admits to having found it 'difficult at times' after stepping up to 'another level' at Manchester United. Moyes has accepted the challenge of succeeding the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, with United having turned to another Scot in their efforts to make a seamless transition from one coach to the next. They appointed Moyes on the back of an impressive job overseen at Everton, with over a decade of loyal service at Goodison Park seeing him turn fortunes around on the blue half of Merseyside. Moyes is, however, prepared to admit that his experiences with the Toffees are nothing compared to what he has taken on at the Theatre of Dreams. "I can't deny Manchester United are on another level. Let's be honest, it would be a step up from just about any club in the world." David Moyes He told Inside United: "The transition from Everton to United has been difficult at times as I have hard decisions to make. Everton are a great club and I was proud to manage them. "I can't deny Manchester United are on another level. Let's be honest, it would be a step up from just about any club in the world." Moyes' first task as United boss is to try and land the first piece of silverware of the English season, with the Red Devils set to face FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday. On the pursuit of major honours, Moyes added: "Of course I will be trying to make the Community Shield the first trophy of many, but if we win it's really something that will have been earned by Sir Alex. It's because of his good work in the Premier League last season that we're in the Community Shield. "I will do my best to finish off the job, but it's Sir Alex who will deserve a lot of the credit if we're successful at Wembley. I cannot wait to get the season started. "I know it won't always be easy, but I just hope we can all work together. My goal is to be successful and have a winning team. I hope that over the years we can have plenty of success." ---------------------------------- He doesnt come across as being the most confident in his abilities to do this job, and lets be honest its a huge one following on from Ferguson How do you think you'll do? I think you will have some sticky patches to be honest, you will probably sign a few before start of the season though Do you think you can win the title by as big a margin as last year? Do you still have the same pull for players as you did under Ferguson? How much time will you give Moyes? This is what its like to have a new manager, you arent used to that!
I think it's good that he was humble and respectful towards SAF. Many fans (myself included) would not appreciate him coming out and saying how easy it was going to be and he is 100% confident he'll win plenty of trophies right from the start.
Agreed. Moyes isn't coming across as overly confident (see also his need for Giggs' help in Europe) and you wonder how he'll cope if results go badly. But least he's taking over a team who are champions so they will pick up results regardless. I think Martinez has a harder job in a way keeping Everton competing for top 6 - especially if he losses one or two of the stars.
Not sure it's a case of confidence, more just a lack of arrogance. I think Moyes is a fairly humble manager compared to many out there, and recognises that, like he said, he's at the biggest club in the country and it's not something you can just stroll into. I think it's almost inevitable that we'll have some sticky patches - pretty much every club with a new manager has them at some point, and every club with an experienced manager for that matter. The big thing Moyes has got to try and do is follow SAF's lead in terms of responding to these patches. Under SAF we lost plenty of games, some by big margins and some with poor performances. But we always responded and rarely lost more than two in a row. No one will mind if we have sticky patches where it isn't always going smoothly as long as we keep picking up some points and looking like we're able to turn it around. Doubt we'll win it by as big a margin as last year - even if Moyes hits the ground sprinting I can't see Chelsea and City being as inept as they were last year. If we win it this season it will be much tighter, possibly down to the last day. I think we do still have the same pull for players - players join for the club not the manager. Moyes may not be on the same level as SAF, but we're still the PL champions and one of the biggest four clubs in the world. Having Villanova instead of Guardiola didn't stop Barca getting Neymar, and Di Matteo managed to get Hazard and Oscar. Our problem with player recruitment is the same it always is - the quality of players we want are usually already playing for top clubs and it takes a lot to prise them away. As for time, I personally think Moyes will get as much as he needs. As long as we're consistently reaching the CL second round and in the top three with a few decent titles challenges and trophies along the way, then I reckon he'll be safe in the job. I think the only point at which he'd come under pressure would be if we went three or four years without even looking like challenging for the title. But then in that situation I reckon SAF would have come under pressure too.
Agree with everything except this. He'll certainly get more time than a Chelsea manager but if you went a couple of seasons without trophies or a decent push for the title, I think there would be a lot of pressure to get rid. It'll be hard for the board and fans to accept a period of little success when you've had so much for so long now.
David Moyes' biggest job by far will be making the players believe they can trust him and they can win trophies with him. Sir Alex Ferguson had total control over everything that went on in his club. He had the admiration and awe of all of his players. Whether they liked him or not they knew who the boss was and they accepted his decisions because on the clear majority of occasions he was right. His players have not questioned him for 20 odd years (or at least that is the impression you get from the outside looking in) and I think it quite likely that some of the more disruptive characters may start questioning Moyes. If results dont go well (and looking at those fixtures you start with there is a serious danger of that) they have to believe that his ideas can turn it round like Ferguson always did. Not only that, the press will start asking questions that Ferguson used to stamp on. Other PL managers will start playing games (Mourinho openly courting Rooney) that they just wouldnt have bothered trying on against Fergie's club, fully aware of the inevitable instability at the moment. All this is going on while David Moyes is trying to stamp his personality, his authority and his ideas on a dressing room of players who have been led by the very best and won the top trophies over the last decade or so. I like David Moyes as a manager, but I can see why it was descibed as the impossible job, and I really hope for his sake he doesnt look back on this in 10 years time and wish he'd waited until the 'job after the job after ferguson' had become available..
Because everyone thinks and says it is an impossible job, he will be given time. If he is not a total disaster this season I.e 6th or 7th or worse and out of the CL at the group stage and no trophies, he won't be sacked. I think we will know in the first 10 matches whether he can hack it. I think he is a tough cookie in the Govan mould. He will be fine.
Fair point. With the squad you've got and with Giggs and Neville on board as the go betweens to the players, he should be ok. To state the obvious, he can on absolutely no account, in no circumstances what so ever, sell Rooney to Chelsea. To do so could be to commit professional suicide. Wenger could just about get away with selling you RVP because he had over a decade behind him and he has worked wonders at Arsenal. In the eyes of many of your fans, selling your prize asset to Chelsea could break Moyes before he starts....
IMO it happening at all will represent a weakness on Moyes' part in the eyes of the footballing world. Firstly Ferguson would never, ever have sanctioned such a move. Secondly, Ferguson would never have allowed such a move to be made without his explicit agreement. Unforunately for Moyes, that is the benchmark the press, the fans and the players will be judging him against. he has to move heaven and earth to stop Rooney joining you, or risk Rooney hitting top form and helping you tear the league apart and in essence hanging himself out to dry in the process.
