Even if I was rich I'd still live in a 1 bedroom flat or a small terraced house. I'd hate having tonnes of stuff to maintain.

Nah. That would get boring eventually. I'd instead buy a few small flats around the country and stay in them while I spent a lot of time hiking in the nearby area.
