Newcastle fan in peace lads. Well done on your CL success, and I hope you stuff City tomorrow whilst picking up a few injuries before our meeting on Tuesday :)

The reason I am here is clear in the title. How would you feel about Mourinho becoming your manager? I posted this on the NUFC board:

"Believes he will be the next Man Utd manager at the end of the season if Man Utd win a double/treble. Is it me or is this bloke taking the piss? He wins the Champions League with Inter, and instead of making them more successful, he leaves to help Madrid. Madrid have improved but with Barca in the way, he has little chance of success. And now he is thinking he can just throw Madrid in the bin so to speak.

He is making a mockery of these massive clubs by picking and choosing when he comes and goes. Inter haven't had a good season, Madrid have but won't win anything and without Mourinho they will stay second best. He will take over Man Utd, win a few trophies and then piss off again. SAF has built that club, no matter how much we hate them, we can't deny that they are one of the biggest and best in the world, so to see Mourinho come in and leave when he wants would be a disgrace to SAF, who, although sometimes annoying, is the best manager in the world imo, and a disgrace to Man Utd.

It would be funny to see them slide but we have been there and know it isn't nice so I would feel slightly sorry for them, because the only way would be down if they now become a club who changes managers every other season.

Mourinho must know that if he goes there, he has to stay for life if he is being consistently successful. "

    ----------------------------------------------------

My source is only The Sun, but I have always believed he will take over Man Utd after SAF. What do you think about the possibility of him just coming and going when he wants? Do you think you will slide? Or will the red flag always be flying high?

Mourinho certainly has the charisma and forceful personality required to manage Man Utd. I have always been concerned that any successor would be picking up a poison chalice once SAF stood down. Mourinho however would be one candidate whom I believe could hit the ground running. I do not believe SAF and the Utd board will make the same mistake twice by announcing in advance the time of his retirement. Talks over his succession will more likely be very secret and disclosed only at the last minute. I have always like David Moynes but his lack of trophy winning at Everton and David Gill's assertion that the new Man Utd manager would be a 'successful' manager do lead me to agree with yourself.

I suppose I'm giving a cautious welcome to the arrival of Mourinho. He is a great personality, and a born winner. He would light up the Premier League once more though I'm often reminded of his tendency in the past to 'park the bus' though seeing him use players like Ronaldo, Ángel di María, Alonso and Ozil do suggest where he has creative players, Jose will use them. Time will tell.

I still haven't made my mind up about Mourinho. Part me wants him in because he's such a great manager and character, and I can't see him letting standards slip too far. But the other part of me says no because it would mean a departure from the traditional United way. Mourinho isn't known for his promotion of young players (though apparently he has blooded a few youth team players this season so you never know).

I Think he would be a good choice as the next manager, but i think we would have to accept him as a short term solution due to his history. I feel however that he is one of the few people who could stabalise the club in the aftermath of SAF and hopefully lay some good foundations for his successor for when he gets bored again.

I remember reading that in the future Mourinho wants to build a dynasty at a club rather than win some trophies and move on like he normally does.

Yeah I heard that. If it's true then I'd be very pleased with him as Fergie's replacement.

Dunno, its a different skill set I think. I can't imagine that he would be bad at it though.

I just think that whoever takes over needs to be a big personality, someone who won't be completely overshadowed by Ferguson's legacy. Mourinho would be man enough for the job.

A lot of people base what they know of Mourinho on his time over here managing Chelsea, what you have to remember is that Chelsea and Man Utd are very differently run clubs. Mourinho left Chelsea because decisions were being made for him. It may sound odd, but at Chelsea there is far more pressure for a manager to succeed than at United. Failure to iwn trophies at Chelsea results in the sack, no matter who you are. Mourinho won the league in his first two seasons at Chelsea, missed out on his third and was gone part way into his fourth. That's the Chelsea way. If you have that pressure to provide instant results then you have less incentive to utilise youth and fringe players. He's at a club now where he has a fantastic first team and a good youth system and is able to use them both though there is still a stupidly high ammount of pressure to succeed.

Yes, Mourihno said this in an interview last year, he said he wanted to build a dynasty at a club and be able to build more than one top team at the same club. He said he couldn't do that at Chelsea because of the way the club was run and that the setup at Milan meant that he wouldn't be able to do it effectively there.

I agree, I think he's one of the only managers (if not the only one) who would be able to replace Fergie and not be affected by the comparisons that will inevitably ensue. Not only that but he has a huge ammount of respect from players all over Europe and he would command that respect in the dressing room from day 1.

Though we could have a reaction like that at Leeds when Clough took over. Similar situations I suppose.

That's exactly what I was thinking. He's never really had a chance to manage a club with a top class youth academy - Porto aren't all that well known for their youth players, Chelsea's youth policy has been a shambles over the past decade, and he didn't really have much of a chance to bring young players through at Inter.

United may well be the perfect club for him to build a dynasty - the Glazers have said their business plan is based on regularly qualifying for the top 4 and reaching the CL knockout rounds, so they should be willing to give him time to build a team without the immediate pressure to buy expensive players and try to win the CL in year one. Also, out of all the owners in the PL, and possibly in Europe, they seem to be the least inclined to try and interfere in team affairs, which is likely to suit Mourinho down to the ground. Can't see him going back to Chelsea, City may well put him in the same position as Chelsea did, and at Liverpool Comolli seems to be having the most influence over transfer decisions which Mourinho would probably not be a fan of. So if he wants to come to England it may well be a choice between United and Arsenal.

I think SAF and Mourinho already have a gentleman's agreement that he'll take over when Fergie retires.
