Scottish Cup Quarter-Final, Fir Park. There are only about 20 minutes left, but this looks okay. Great, in fact. Aberdeen are 2-0 up and seem to be heading (cruising) into the Semi-Finals. Before the match, Rory Fallon said: "Motherwell are a good side but if we can get through then I believe we can do something good." Quite right. Fallon has scored both goals and everything suddenly seems magic. Plus, Motherwell have just had a man sent off. Not wishing to tempt fate, obviously, but surely this will be Aberdeen's year in the cup. (Not before time.) (PS. In 1982, John Hewitt scored for Aberdeen in 9.6 seconds against Motherwell - the fastest goal in Scottish Cup history, in my amazing opinion.)
Motherwell appeal for a penalty. Referee says "no, this is Aberdeen's year in the cup". Life is good.
In fact, John Hewitt's goal may be the fastest in Scottish football history (according to an old article from the BBC): Celtic's John McPhail is said to have scored in six seconds against East Fife on 16 December 1950 during a 6-2 win for the Glasgow side. Berwick Rangers' Alex Burke reportedly found the net in just seven seconds shortly after kick-off in a match against Raith Rovers at Shielfield Park on 22 February 2003. And John Hewitt netted for Aberdeen in 9.6 seconds against Motherwell at the start of a 1-0 win at Fir Park in 1982, netting the quickest-ever goal in the Scottish Cup. All of these goals share something in common: with the exception of Hewitt's wonder-strike against Motherwell, none were recorded for television, casting doubt on the veracity of their claims. Or, to summarise: pics or it didn't happen. Aberdeen are getting "edgy", according to the boffins on the radio. I'm certainly getting edgy. Six minutes to go.....
it's in it's in it's in it's in it's in it's in it's in it's in it's in it's in it's in IT'S OUT!! Congratulations Psycho.
Praise be. Final whistle. 2-1 Aberdeen. An absolutely season-saving and brilliant result. Excellent, excellent, excellent. Craig Brown's first win over his old team - the perfect time to get it. Happy days.
Oh. Where are my manners? And well done to Celtic, of course, for destroying Dundee Utd. What a humping.
Draw time indeed. Aberdeen have got Hibs (thank God). I wonder who Celtic will get? The tension mounts....
I just saw the Motherwell goal....Brown won't be happy. I must say, the Motherwell ball boy was right at hand to get them moving again after the agonising miss. He deserves a mention.
You have me at a disadvantage, unfortunately, as I "watched" all the action unfold on The Wireless and have yet to see any actual visual footage from the absorbing soccer cup knockout match Sunday. I know that Craig Brown is frequently unhappy, however, so no real change there. I instinctively warm to his bouts of exasperated despair, as it happens, recognising a fellow traveller. Your ball boy reference is intriguing, however, so I'll be needing to do some research on the internet highway dot com. (If you need any lessons in modernity, Rebel, don't be shy to ask.)
