Motherwell manager Craig Brown and his assistant Archie Knox do not want to be considered for the vacancy at Aberdeen.

The veteran pair, who work without contracts at Fir Park, spoke with officials from Aberdeen on Tuesday.

"Out of courtesy, we met with Aberdeen but we were never specifically offered the job," Brown told BBC Scotland.

"I had a call from an agent asking me about Aberdeen and I was lukewarm. I wasn't even thinking about an offer from another club."

Brown and Knox, have firmly established Motherwell in the top six of the Scottish Premier League on a limited budget since taking over in December 2009.

And Knox has an Aberdeen connection, having worked with great success as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Pittodrie in the early 1980s.

Commenting on the approach from Aberdeen, Motherwell chief executive Leeann Dempster said: "Given the fantastic on-field success in 2010, it is not surprising that other clubs are taking an interest in our management team.

"With that in mind, we can confirm that representatives from Aberdeen Football Club met briefly with both Craig Brown and Archie Knox yesterday afternoon.

"However, both have decided to reject any approach and reiterated their commitment to Motherwell Football Club. We look forward to continued success under both men in the future."

Aberdeen will now continue their search for a new boss, with Scotland Under-21 manager Billy Stark and former Hibernian manager John Hughes among the leading contenders.

Former Dons striker Billy Dodds has also expressed an interest, while Raith Rovers boss John McGlynn has been linked with succeeding the sacked Mark McGhee.

According to former Dons winger Joe Miller, Stark is the "ideal candidate".

Miller told BBC Scotland he would jump at the chance to be Stark's assistant, should he be given the chance to succeed McGhee.

"I know Billy very well and if the opportunity came along to do that then I'd love it," he said.

McGhee was sacked last week, bringing a turbulent 18-month reign to an end with the Dons second bottom in the SPL.

Miller, who starred for the Dons for 12 years in two separate spells and was most recently assistant boss at Dundalk, is keen to help his old club.

"I've been in the management game but my stock isn't high enough at the moment: I'm 43 and have been manager at Clyde and been over at Dundalk," he said.

"My career has been a steady progression and I'm still looking to assist for a few years yet.

"If the opportunity came along, and whoever gets the job, (for me) to go in as an assistant job, that would be fantastic."

And Miller believes the Dons board should look to Stark to restore the club's fortunes.

"Billy's got a fantastic job there and his stock is very high because he's done ever so well with the U-21s and could be an ideal candidate," said Miller.

"Knowing Billy, he's passionate about the game and has been at both ends of the spectrum: worked as an assistant with Tommy Burns and did well with Celtic and Kilmarnock.

"He's also managed on his own with spells in the First Division with St Johnstone and Morton.

"He knows the youth players and those in the lower divisions; he'd be an ideal candidate."
