Interesting read about MOTD here; https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-...the-day-premier-league-football-b1906082.html I get that the format hasn't changed, and that it can be pretty cheesy at times. Can't decide if it'd be interesting hearing non-footballers give their opinions/thoughts, or just a waste of time. Given that (as far as I know) none of us are current or former professional footballers, and we all enjoy discussion on here, could the same idea work on a show like MOTD. Thoughts?
They can cut out the pundits and Lineker entirely as far as I’m concerned and just show more of the football. I don’t dislike them but they are very predictable and the little jokes really don’t help. If we have to have pundits a nice balance would be an ex player, a retired manager and a retired ref, then we get different perspectives. And a proper sports journalist, like Henry Winter, to chair. But they would have tobe prepared to be totally honest.
As most on here would expect, I enjoy the analysis from ex professionals, especially Danny Murphy, who I think is the best by a country mile. I expect the BBC will change it, as they do with most successful formats.
The best MOTD was when they had Danny Baker on. **** the pompous ex-pros (Shearer is a massive hypocrite), get more fan perspectives.
I’m not especially negative about the current format, although I agree with Stan about Lineker. How much dosh does he need? Isn’t he doing Spanish footie this season too? I had an eye test at Vision Express a few weeks ago and he’s on their flipping posters; has he got his own specs now for Pete’s sake? I’m with Col on Danny Murphy. Also like Wrightie. Shearer’s on repeat most of the time and hasn’t anything new to say. I suppose they want to do to MotD what they’ve done to Question Time. Only a matter of time before it’s hosted by Cheryl Baker and the house pundits are Russell Brand and Grayson Perry.
Lineker is a pale imitation of Des Lynham as a presenter......... The format is stale but maybe it's because the package they're trying to sell isn't as good as they'd have us believe..........
I mostly fast forward between the games unless there is something controversial worth the analysis but I do listen to the managers. For the lower team boring games I'm afraid I just fast forward to the goals! Am I a footballing heathen?
Someone like Roy Keane who isn't afraid to upset people would liven it up... Probably they'll end up with female presenters like most channels seem to be using now...
Not broke, don't fix it. Please please don't put fans on. Admittedly a variation in the quality of pundits - the difference between Mackie (love him but not the brightest) and Ainsworth (clearly a student of the game and learning manager with 7 years at Wycome) on Sky Sports News this week was massive. I like the idea of having a decent* manager (ex or current) as a pundit. Ref for certain incidents would be good. *I said decent. That is mostly there to exclude Redknapp. Include him in MOTD in any capacity and I'll happily burn it to the ground myself in favour of some sort of Gen Z friendly goalzone monstrosity.
Sorry, one other thought - last week and this week I've managed to not find out the premier league results (easier than I'd feared) before watching MOTD. Really enjoyable experience and definitely recommend.
Yeah, I agree it’s a better watch when you don’t know the scores. It irks me a little that the game order on the show reflects a form of ranking in terms of entertainment, goals or glamour of the fixture, as you then know that the games shown last will be borefests. Personally, I’d rather they showed them in fixture order so the viewer can’t necessarily work this out.
Yep, that would be nice. Could always make the better games longer, but you'd still not know from the order.
I gave up watching MotD a few seasons ago - the Premier League and it's primadona players, managers and hangers-on really started to bore me. Maybe I'll get back into once we're back in "The Promised Land" I quite enjoy EFL on Quest, Colin Murray does like to get excited about some of the most inane of things. I do wish they'd stretch out the Championship coverage a bit more, but trying to fit in all the EFL fixtures into a two hour window pretty much negates that happening. A wide variety of pundits, including Holloway. It's light hearted, and it doesn't take itself too seriously I don't think.
Hardly watch it anymore as can’t stand Lineker, who just comes across as a smug, arrogant ****. Would definitely watch it if they had someone like Winter on board….very knowledgeable about all things football and comes across very well. Like the idea of an ex refs view as well…..
