We all love a Southampton player, let's be honest. We always have a admiration for the majority of those that pull on the Red and White stripes at St Marys every other weekend. However, puting a bit of a negative spin on things; who is your most disliked Southampton player of all time? After reading CBK's comments on Jamie Redknapp yesterday, I have to say he's well up there on my list. Also, Andreas Jacobsson used to wind me up no end when I saw him play in that fateful last Premiership season - so unbelievably full of mistakes! I remember another centre half, Alan Bennett - who was equally as useless aswell! Never had much time for these players. Anyone remember Steve Baker aswell? (Sorry for the negativity in this thread - I am with everyone on the bus, loving every moment of the Liebherr era, trust me!)
The centre-back Pele - what a waste of space. I shall never forget (or forgive) that penalty he conceded against Derby at SMS.
Rory Delap for me,still our record signing! and how the hell is he still playing in the premier league? oh i know,he's got a long throw! wow! Didn't particulary like Kevin Phillips either, dour sod!
What a bloody idiot he was that day! i hate thick footballers! he had absolutely no sense when he done that.
Jermaine Wright for me. I honestly felt like getting up out of my seat and going back home whenever I heard he was in the starting XI...!! Mind you, it's being there and having to sit through those bad times that make what we're seeing this season all the better...
I remember reading somewhere that Jermaine Wright had some sort of clause in his contract which meant he had to play a certain amount of games in a season - that's why Burley kept selecting him for the starting XI! Anyone know if that was true or just a crazy rumour?
Apart from Puncheon, maybe Saganowski. Cam in initially on loan and did brilliantly, then again when coming back from loan to AAB. But after that, once his place in the team was settled, he was sh*t and didn't try.
In terms of overhyped players, that would apply to the double signing of Kerry Dixon and David Speedie back in the early 90's. I found it hard to like them for obvious reasons...they couldn't kick their own backsides.
I agree, Saga was a major let-down - played out of his skin in the first season (on loan) just to get himself a contract it seemed. I remember the fantastic hat-trick he scored away at Wolves when we won 6-0 - that was one of his highlights. However, when he had gotten himself a contract, he put on loads of weight and was rubbish the next year (the only decent thing he did was to score the winning goal in the last game of the season to keep us up). Turned into a useless, lazy player over night. His record says it all: 10 goals in 13 appearences in his first year (on loan) and then 9 goals in 55 appearences after he signed permanently - what a contrast! Such a shame because he was a real fan favourite for a very brief time.
Jason Puncheon or Agustin Delgado. Neither of them showed any respect to the club. There were a few players I disliked in our squad when we were last in the Championship, but only because they were a bit crap. At least they tried.
They were Branfoot signings that came as part of the package that saw Shearer got to Blackburn. Speedie in particular didn't want to come and his attitude made that obvious. I have to say that Chatterley was bloody awful and probably the worst player I saw pull on a Saints shirt.
