WARD - WE HAVE TO BOUNCE BACK

Manager on Saturday's game

John Ward will be looking for his side to bounce back this weekend following their 2-1 midweek defeat to high flying Rotherham.

Rovers have been on a good run in recent weeks, and the manager believes his side will be able to give Morecambe a tough test on Saturday.

John said: “Defeat happens, and you have to bounce back, this is not a unique situation.

“The last time we lost, against Gillingham, we bounced back very well, and we have to put that experience to good use again.

“We have handled ourselves well, despite the defeat on Tuesday we have looked back over the games we have played in recent weeks and we have handled ourselves well against teams that have been playing well.

“We are quite capable of going up there and handling ourselves well. With our performances I think we have gained a lot of respect from our opponents, which is what we have to continue to do.”

Although Rovers have put themselves in a much better position over the last few weeks, the manager knows his side have to be careful not to get sucked back in to the danger zone.

He said: “It is still a good situation, we are in a much better place than where we were three, four, five weeks ago. It is still not a clear situation, and we still have a lot of work to do to get out of it.

“Football is full of strange situations, and we have a lot of work to do to make sure we don’t get pulled back into that bottom area, which is an area we don’t want to be in.

“There are never any foregone conclusions. We have to make sure we know how we have improved the situation and that we continue to do that.”

And the manager believes his side have earned themselves a lot of respect over the last few weeks.

He said: “The crowd recognised the efforts of the team and applauded them off, and that is a key thing.

“Your supporters know what they are talking about and what they want to see from the team representing them, and even in defeat they can say they saw the boys dig deep and have a good go on behalf of the club.

“We have earned respect off of our own supporters, the players have respect from me and they have respect off opponents, and we have to make sure that continues.”

The manager could be forced to make a couple of changes for the game, with Ryan Brunt and Fabian Broghammer doubtful through injury.

John said: “Ryan Brunt is a bit sore, he has got a knee problem and we are not sure how it came about.

“He has bit of soreness and a bit of swelling this morning, so at the moment we have to say he is doubtful for the weekend.

“Fabian is sore with a tweaked hamstring, but again he is a doubt for the weekend, so we have a problem there. David Clarkson also has a sore ankle and we will be looking at him this morning.

“We don’t have a big squad to deal with it to excess, so we have to deal with these guys and look after.

“Jim Paterson is fit, but Adam Virgo has only trained for a few days and it is the first time I have seen him on the training ground since I have been here, so I do not think it would be right to consider him for this trip.”

However, the John believes he has quality on his bench that is ready to step up.

He said: “There is quality on the bench and we showed that the other night, as we had to make two changes because of injuries.

“There are guys there chomping at the bit waiting to go, and now it might just happen for them. It gives other people the chance to come on and play and stake a claim for themselves.

“The games are thick and fast, but we are hopefully these guys can get better quickly.

“I have a squad now that even with two or three omissions from Tuesday there is still enough experience and life to go and give Morecambe a tough afternoon.”

Bristol Rovers boss John Ward to consider re-uniting Eliot Richards and Tom Hitchcock at Morecambe

Eliot Richards and Tom Hitchcock may be given an opportunity to resume the strike partnership that flourished at Fleetwood Town last month when Bristol Rovers go to Morecambe on Saturday.
Manager John Ward has this morning confirmed that Ryan Brunt is 'doubtful' to make the trip to the Globe Arena to face Morecambe because of a knee injury, while David Clarkson is also struggling with an ankle complaint.

That leaves Ward short of options in a bid to continue with the policy of one physical striker to spearhead his favoured 4-3-3 formation and could herald a switch to a more orthodox 4-4-2.
Ward said: "Ryan said he felt his knee was a bit sore during the first-half of Tuesday's game. We don't quite know how he did it, but it was clear at half-time that he couldn't continue.

"We don't think it is too serious, but there is a bit of swelling and soreness this morning and at this moment in time he is doubtful.
"We've got quality on the bench so there are guys there waiting to go and now it might just happen for them. If we cast our minds back to the Fleetwood game we played Eliot Richards and Tom Hitchcock up front and they were a major reason why we won the match 3-0 that day.
"A couple of weeks later at our next game, people were, quite rightly, wondering why I changed it by taking them out of the team. They are two good young footballers who are feeling good about themselves at the moment.
"They are a bit different to Ryan Brunt in the way they play the game, but it's not a worry for me if I decide to select them on Saturday because I know they both have the quality to pose defenders a problem."
Winger Fabian Broghammer was also withdrawn during the first-half of Tuesday night's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Rotherham United and is expected to miss out again because of a hamstring complaint, but Ward said: "It gives other people an opportunity to stake their claim and it is up to them to come in and take that chance.
"I've got a squad of players now that has enough experience and life about it, even with two or three omissions, to go to Morecambe and give them a real game."
Ward, meanwhile, is confident that his side can bounce back quickly after seeing a recent six-game unbeaten run ended by Steve Evans' promotion-chasing side at the Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night.
He said: "Defeats happen and you have to bounce back. Losing games of football will happen to every football team, we're not unique in that.
"What is important is how the group reacts to those defeats. The last time we lost a game against Gillingham (on January 5) we bounced back very well and we have to use that experience to do the same again.
"I'm certainly confident that the players will do that. I don't expect to walk out on to the training ground and see the players with their chins on their chests and with their heads down. I expect them to be saying:
"It's a defeat, so what? Let's bounce back, let's get on with it."
He added: "There is a confidence around because of how we have improved and we are still in a good situation. We are much better off than we were say five weeks ago, but we are still not out of the woods.
"We still have a lot of work to do to make sure that we don't get pulled back into that bottom area of the league and that starts again at Morecambe on Saturday."

I can't see beyond a score draw with this one as well seamge as Morecombe are on great form.

But you never know - we're unbeaten away under JW and the last time we went up to that neck of the woods we gave Fleetwood a good going over.

Let's see if Keith and Alfred can deliver! :D

We may see Ellis Harrison or Woodards with Clarkson injured 4-4-2 is more adventurous than of late hopefully the team can pull a result out of the bag as BB said against an in form team looking for promo.

I shuddered a little when I read that Ward had mentioned Paterson and Virgo oooh noo on performances so far this season I would rather see them loaned out to another team than play for us.Patersons legs have gone no pace and Virgo never been the same since his injury, not sure he was up to much before then (no offence just my opinion) he tried hard perhaps just not fit or low on confidence.

The only problem is that we do not have much depth or potential game changers plan B with Ryan Brog and Clarkson injured.

I cannot remeber how Morecambe play is it on the ground or in the air long balls so given there results to date and ours I have plumped for a draw given the changes required in formation, tactics and personnel. Its going to be a long old game fingers crossed.

The stats show that Morecambe tend to draw at home whilst we all want a win a draw would be a great result on Saturday following our loss to Rotherham.

seamge, as ever, quality thread <applause>

i got us down to win this game. bouncebackability. under JW we are fighting and showing passion. the players on twitter showed how disappointed they were and determined to get 3 points on saturday. with hammer and brunt almost certainly out for the game, i think its time for clarkson and richards to show why they should be in the 1st team and not warming the bench. richards has this chance vs rotherham when he came on early for hammer but richards i thought was poor. would like to see harrison get game time though.

think woodards will be recalled to LW though.

Shrimps face two massive games

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley says the club's next two games will have a huge bearing on the outcome of the season.
The Shrimps play host to Bristol Rovers on Saturday before travelling to in form Burton on Tuesday in what is an important week for the resurgent Shrimps.
Four wins in five games has seen the Shrimps move to within six points off the top seven and Bentley is hopeful of another win – and a big crowd – at the Globe this Saturday for the visit of John Ward’s resurgent Rovers following the 1-0 win at top of the table Port Vale at the weekend.
He said: “Saturday’s win was a fantastic one and I was proud of the lads for their effort and determination.
“They put their bodies on the line to get the three points and maintain our good run of form.
“I was asked at the weekend about did I think we could make the play-offs but I am not even looking at that.
“I just want us to take every game as it comes and we will see where that puts us.
“Four wins in five is a great return and I hope the fans come out in numbers to support us this weekend in what is a game between the league’s top two in-form sides.
“Both teams are playing well and will be going all out for the win and I think it is one the fans will really enjoy.”
Despite the recent successes Bentley said he was still looking to add to his squad.
He said: “I am still looking and still talking and there are a few possibilities for us but we don’t have to rush into anything.”
The Shrimps will be without Andy Wright on Saturday as he will be suspended for one game after his sending off against Port Vale at the weekend.
Andy Fleming and Robbie Threlfall should both be back in contention however for a place in the starting line-up.

MATCH PREVIEW

Bristol Rovers travel north to visit Morecambe’s Globe Area this weekend looking to recover from the narrow midweek home loss to high flying Rotherham.

Rovers’ performances since John Ward’s arrival have been marked by a steely determination to grind out results where necessary. This is in marked contrast to the performances earlier in the season, such as that during the home game against Morecambe.

After a sluggish start from both sides Rovers began to get their noses in front as the first half drew to a close, but the home side capitulated after the break and failed to take anything from the game. Gary McDonald opened the scoring for the visitors, before defender Nick Fenton made it 2-0 five minutes later and Kevin Ellison completed the scoring for the Shrimps.

On Saturday the Shrimps produced the shock of the day in League Two as they beat Port Vale, at Vale Park, to secure their third win in four games. The game started with Port Vale quickly on the attack and Ryan Burge tested the seasider’s Barry Roche in the first minute of the game after a free flowing move.

After that early scare Morecambe settled into the game and matched the home side. Andy Wright forced Chris Neal into a save after a quickly taken corner before Jim Bentley’s side produced the best chance of the first half when Gary McDonald hit a cross to the far post forcing Kevin Ellison to divert wide at full stretch with Neal nowhere to be seen.

Lewis Alessandra scored the only goal of the day just after 63 minutes to give the Shrimps their 6th away win of the season and equal their home tally. It took them to 10th in the table and just 7 points off a Play Off spot.

Alessandra capitalised on a mistake from former Preston keeper Neal. Neal stretched for and then dropped a Gary McDonald cross into the path of the striker who bundled it over the line from the edge of the six yard box.

From there it was all Port Vale especially when Morecambe were reduced to 10 men with Wright handed a red card for a second yellow 18 minutes from time. Ashley Vincent pushed the ball past Wright, who couldn't get out of the way before the winger crashed into him. Referee Dave Phillips felt it was deliberate and Wright, having been cautioned in the first half for foul on Myrie-Williams, was sent off.

Daniel Jones smashed in a 25 yard effort that was well saved by Roche and Vale were at last building up a head of steam when League top scorer Tom Pope was off target with a header and Myrie-Williams drilled wide after a corner.

Things were becoming desperate towards the end as the home side piled forward, but the ball wouldn't drop for them as a string of crosses failed to find a target. When one did, Pope rose highest to direct another header on goal, only for Roche to save on the line.

Jones fired in another shot from distance that whistled just past the post before Myrie-Williams had an injury-time effort from an angle, punched out by Roche, Richard Duffy picked up the loose ball only to see his goal-bound strike diverted away.

Last season the Shrimpers were looking to consolidate their position in League Two but surprised everyone by topping the table by October after just three defeats (one of which was a 3-2 home loss to Rovers). A run of poor form leading up to Christmas saw the club drop to mid-table where they stayed for the remainder of the campaign.

Last season Rovers secured a double over the Lancashire team. A 2-1 home victory and that 3-2 away win. At the Mem Lee Brown opened the scoring, 12 minutes after half time, tapping in an Eliot Richards cross that was touched on by Scott McGleish.

With 15 minutes left to play McGleish tucked away a penalty awarded after Danny Carlton tugged Matthew Lund's shirt. Jordan Burrows then missed a chance for the Shrimps but Kevin Ellison fired in the rebound in the 88th minute.

In the game at the Globe Arena Cain Bolger gave Rovers the lead on 27 minutes. Then 12 minutes into the second half the Shrimps hit two quick goals from Jason Price and Kevin Ellison. Scott McGleish almost immediately pulled the scores level before Joe Anyinsah won the game for the Gas on 72 minutes.

Talking about last Saturday’s game Morecambe defender Andy Parrish described it as, “The best league win of the season so far. The Capital One Cup win over Blackpool on the first day of the season was probably the high of the campaign so far but this was the best league win of the season without a doubt.

“To beat the league leaders on their home ground was a great achievement and I think we deserved it because of our hard work and determination. They threw everything at us but our lads threw their bodies in front of everything that came at us and there was a huge determination to keep them out.

“We have now won four out of five and can start looking at the teams above us rather than over our shoulder and it is a great position to be in.”

Manager Bentley commented, "It was a terrific win against a fantastic team with a very good manager. I hope Vale go up. I watched them a couple of times and knew we had to stop the supply to the front two as much as possible. We worked very hard in training on how to do that and it's come off for us.

"The game could have gone either way and fortunately the result has gone for us. We had to ride the storm, especially after we went down to 10 men, but the lads have defended magnificently, Barry Roche has made some good saves and I'm very proud of all of them.

"The plan was to hit Vale on the break and we've managed to do that. We had two or three other promising situations before we scored and Lewis tucked the ball away well. We've got a great spirit in the group. All I ask of them is they give everything for the shirt and they've certainly put a shift in."

With Morecambe on a high and Rovers looking to bounce back this has all the ingredients of the two form teams pulling out all the stops to produce a real crackerjack of a match.

Andrew Wright was sent off in Morecambe's win at Port Vale last weekend and will be banned for the visit of in-form Bristol Rovers.
Midfielder Andy Fleming and full-back Robbie Threlfall are fit to return.
Rovers could be without attacking duo Ryan Brunt (knee) and Fabian Broghammer (hamstring), who were both injured in the midweek defeat to Rotherham.
David Clarkson (ankle) joins long-term absentees Scott Bevan, Matt Gill, Adam Virgo and Matt Harrold in missing out.
