Northenders (and Shrimp fans) On Tuesday PNE travel to play their near neighbours Morecambe in the JPT competition. This game might be seen as a bit of an inconvenience by some supporters, but it is an opportunity for clubs in the lower divisions to have a legitimate chance of reaching a Cup Final. Northend will have to be on their guard and should recall a previous cup game against the shrimps "On 14 August 2007, Morecambe played their first fixture in the League Cup and recorded a shock 2-1 win against Preston North End at Deepdale". Morecambe FC or shrimps as they are nicknamed play at the Globe Arena and their colours are red shirts and white shorts, were formed in 1920 after a meeting at the local West View Hotel. The club then took its place in the Lancashire Combination League for the 1920-21 season, sharing grounds with the Cricket Club during the first season. At the end of the first season the club moved grounds to Roseberry Park. A few years later after the purchase of the ground by the then-President, Mr. J.B. Christie, the ground's name was changed to Christie Park, in his honour. The club remained at Christie Park until moving to their new stadium The Globe Arena in 2010. The shrimps won the Lancashire Combination on 5 occasions and were runners up once prior to joining the football conference League. The shrimps were elevated to the football conference in 1995-96 and established themselves as one of the leading conference clubs and only Woking had a longer unbroken membership of the league at that time. Runners up spot was acheived on the one occasion and the play offs were narrowly missed twice. Morecambe also defeated several League clubs in the FA Cup during this period In November 2005 Sammy Mcllroy was appointed as caretaker Manager following Manager Jim Harvey's heart attack during a game at Christie Park against Cambridge United. After an initial three months period, Mcllroy was given the job until the end of the season with Harvey expected to return at the end of the season. On Harvey's first day back at work he was sacked and and Mcllroy appointed manager. Morecambe were promoted to the football League for the first time in their history after beating Exeter City 2-1 in the playoff Final at Wembley on 20th May 2007 in front of 40000 football supporters. Morecambe played their first game in the football League against Barnet at Christie Park in August 2007 and won their first ever league point in a 0-0 draw. On the 14th August 2007 the shrimps played their first fixture in the League cup and beat PNE at Deepdale 1-2, they followed this win up by beating The Wolves 3-1. Morecambe ended their first season in Div 2 in 11th place, they also ended season 2008-09 in 11th place. 2009-2010 was the shrimps last season at Christie Park and they ended the season in fourth place after losing in the play offs. Morecambe won their first game at the new Globe Arena beating Coventry City in the League cup first round. May 9th of this year Mcllroy left the club by mutual consent after 5 years and what the club chairman described as the best manager in his reign at the club. Jim Bently was appointed the clubs new manager on the 13th May 2011. Several ex PNE players have managed Morecambe including : Jimmy Milne Ken Horton Joe Dunn Ken Waterhouse And Sammy Mcllroy of course. Ronnie Clayton (Rovers) Tuesday night : Both Morecambe and PNE have had a very good start to the season and currently hold 3rd position in their respective divisions. Morecambe dropped a point away to Torquay yesterday, and as we all know the Lilywhites came a cropper in the East End of London at Leyton Orient losing 2-1 and bringing their 7 game winning run to an end. Northend have already beaten the shrimps 0-3 this season in a pre season friendly at the Globe Arena, but this will count for absolutely nothing when the two clubs meet on Tuesday night. PNE and Morecambe are friendly rivals and Northend have always had a healthy support from the Morecambe neck of the woods over the years and both clubs have had some close links with each other. The JPT competition has rules that restrict the number of reserves that can be fielded in a game, thus preventing managers fielding seriously weakened teams and letting down the fans. It's going to be interesting then just what team Phil Brown decides to take to the field on Tuesday night. It will be a tough game as cup games usualy are, and this being having a strong element of derby game about it will give it an edge. Comments and predictions on this thread please (if you have any)... "Curtis" I wonder if you will be the first one to join us on this thread with your thoughts.
interesting did not know J H came back thought he was stabbed in the back while on sick leave.Good to see they have a heart and did it correctly
Sheffield United Game Postponed (Confirmed) A late call-up to the Northern Ireland squad for Conor McLaughlin has caused the postponement of Saturday's game versus Sheffield United. Conor joins Iain Hume and Keammar Daley in the international ranks for this weekend's action, with Adam Barton also in the Republic of Ireland U21 squad for their midweek fixture next Tuesday. North End will now face the Blades at Deepdale on Wednesday 19th October at 7.45pm, with all tickets purchased for the original date still valid for this new date. This should help Phil Brown in his team selection for tomorrow night's game and give him more options as to what he wants to do.
Personally would put out a strong side as we now have no league game for 2 weeks. As it is we have to play 6 players who played on Saturday. Being a follower of the real club on the Lune(Lancaster City FC) just had to point out the Shrimps never won a league title on the way to the league. Just one last point, the last ever 2nd replay in an FA Cup Match took place at Christie Park Morecambe beat Lancaster 4-2 after 2 draws.
Hi maclad. Ah!! a dolly blue supporter and a follower of fashion... Whatever team Northend go with Brown will want to win that's for sure. Have a soft spot for the shrimps having played a season for them when they started a junior team, played against Northend at Christie Park for them in a youth cup match, travelled to and from the game on the Northend coach......Northend beat us by the way.... Incidently maclad Morcambe juniors had a Lancaster born lad in goal "Alex Smith" who was on the small side but a terrific prospect, fearless and as brave as they come. He later joined Weymouth. When he left he played for Bolton, Halifax Town, and joined PNE at the age of 38 as understudy to Roy Tunks. He will be 73 on the 29th October. He would have been a top keeper had he not been so short in height...
What Phil Brown think's about this competition and tonigh't game. Phil Brown says he will respect the integrity of the Johnstoneâs Paint Trophy when Preston North End tackle Morecambe tonight. The North End boss won this competition as a player with Bolton, while his No.2 Brian Horton guided Port Vale to the Trophy. His only gripe with the tournament is the selection rules, which were designed to stop managers making wholesale changes. At the Globe Arena this evening (7.30pm), Brown has to choose six of the players who started Saturdayâs defeat at Leyton Orient. Alongside them, heâll give run-outs to five members of the squad who have been on the fringes in recent weeks. Keammar Daley will play before jetting off for international duty with Jamaica. And there are also likely to be starts for Ian Ashbee and Adam Barton. What Brown wonât do is go down the same route that Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson did in the previous round. Megson fielded six players from his previous line-up but then substituted three of them inside the opening few minutes. Brown told the Evening Post: âI will judge this competition on its merits, and rightly so. âYou get good prize money, and itâs a well thought-out tournament. We will give it the time of the day with a decent enough side which we think can go to Morecambe and win the game. âOnce upon a time it was called the Sherpa Van Trophy and I had great pleasure to go up the steps at Wembley and lift the trophy for Bolton. âTo a certain extent, the team has been chosen for me. âWe have to play six players from the Leyton Orient game or play six who will face Walsall in our next league game on October 15. âI know which six Iâll be playing. âThe criteria for the other five players from my perspective are guys who need a game at this level. âKeammar Daley needs a game, so does Ian Ashbee, as do one or two others. âThe disappointing result at the weekend still lingers in my mind and that might normally have a bearing on selection. âBut in the cold light of day when youâve collected 21 points from the last 24 available, to make harsh and radical changes wouldnât be right.â North End will be up against a Morecambe side going well in League Two. The Shrimps have enjoyed a spell at the top of the table and currently sit third. Said Brown: âJim Bentley went in as manager during the summer and has done a fantastic job so far. âTheyâve started off fantastically well and it will be a tough game. âWe went there in July for a pre-season friendly and also last month for a reserve game. âBoth games were feisty affairs and weâll have to battle for everything tonight. âJim will be wanting to win the game and so will we.â Brownâs annoyance about having to play six of his regulars has been reduced somewhat by the postponement of Saturdayâs League One clash with Sheffield United. A call-up to the full Northern Ireland squad for Conor McLaughlin yesterday morning triggered the postponement â the right-back joins Daley and Iain Hume on international duty. The Blades will now visit Deepdale on Wednesday, October 19, kick-off 7.45pm. Brown said: âIâm delighted for Conor that heâs got a call-up to the full squad, and Iâm glad Saturdayâs game is off because us having players away would have given United an advantage.â Game on then.....
Morecambe's shout now. What manaager Jim Bentley thinks : Said Bentley: âThis is a great tie â Preston will bring a lot of fans with them. âItâs a derby game, a cup tie, and this is a competition which we want to do well in. âPreston have a manager and assistant manager who both know the game inside out, and theyâve made a strong start to the season in League One. âWe played them in pre-season and, to be fair, that was our poorest performance in the friendly matches. âThat day we did something different by having them in for training in the morning and the lads looked a bit jaded during the game. âQuite a bit of time has passed since then and hopefully youâll see a much stronger performance this time. âWeâve played Preston quite a few times down the years, either in friendlies, the Carling Cup or at reserve team level. âIn 2007 we beat them 2-1 at Deepdale in the Carling Cup and I scored our first goal with a volley from a corner at the Town End,â added Bentley. Kevin Ellison will be looking to follow-up his wonder goal at Torquay by giving the North End defence a difficult time tonight. That was his fifth league goal of the campaign, one less than Carlton. Shrimps skipper Stewart Drummond will be facing his home-town club. It was Preston who provided the opposition for his testimonial in July, the midfielder now approaching 300 games for the Shrimps in two spells. Drummond is one of five ever-presents in league action this season, and is likely to be pulling the strings from midfield tonight. Mmmm...
Reflections on tonight. 1. Time for Turner to return. 2. Why the panic in the final 10 minutes of games? Is 4 3 3 showing up (or creating) deficiencies in defence.
Preston North End's second round Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash against local rivals Morecambe. Tuesday October 4, 2011 7:01 Tonight's Teams. PNE: Arestidou, Gray, Ashbee, Carlisle, Proctor, Tsoumou, McLean, Smith, Barton, Parry, Daley. Subs: Turner, Mayor, Wright, Miller, Zibaka. Keammar Daley is making his second competitive start in a Preston shirt after featuring against Southampton in the third round of the Carling Cup. Daley's first game was against the Shrimps in pre-season where he scored a great goal on the night. Preston playing in the suspected 4-4-2 formation with Proctor and Tsoumou up front. Morecambe 0 Preston 1 7:31 Brian McLean header direct from a Parry cross. 7:50 Tsoumou half-volleys it home after a great chipped ball through from Daley. 7:59 Fenton almost scores for the hosts but his shot, after a period of home pressure, is saved by Arestidou. 8:00 Still......more North Enders come into the Stadium! 8:06 Now Jevons heads over - good spell of pressure from the hosts. Morecambe continue to come forward but Preston's defence keeps sending them back. It looks like they have finally sorted the fan problems with the PNE supporters now in three of the four stands... 8:15 HT: Morecambe 0 Preston 2 Att: 4,385 (Away: 2,153) Oops :9:09 Arestidou comes out for the ball and is dispossessed on the edge of his area by Jevons for a tap in . !-2 PNE PNE hanging on: Arestidou saves before a shot is again blocked...Morecambe corner... Another corner as again a shot is blocked. Preston's fans invade the pitch! The Lilywhites have done it. Preston's fans go wild - a good win tonight - let's see what manager Phil Brown has to say postmatch! What an exciting end to this JP cup tie, very hard luck to the shrimps no one likes getting beat on penalties. PNE had the game in their pocket but the shrimps came back to level the scores and force the tie into a penalty shoot out. PNE seemed to be on their way to the next round but it would seem the Northend keeper made an error which allowed Morecambe back into the game. Well done PNE...........great fight by the shrimps.
Evening tommyt. Yes although Arestidou has done well in some games he has cost us in others and providing Turner is fit I am sure he will be back for the next game. You are correct when you mention late panic, it has occured in several games now, and needs addressing by Mr Brown. It is becoming a habit that is ruining all the preceding good work earlier in the game, not sure why to be honest we have enough experienced players to prevent this sort of thing. Hopefully when Turner returns it will help to resolve the problem...
Sad news from Accrington tonight, young defender Tom Bender was seriously injured during the game between Accrington Stanley and Tranmere Rovers. It is reported that the 18 year old has broken his neck. The the match was abandoned due to the players being so badly effected by the incident.. He is a Colchester United player and currently on loan with Stanley. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
An entertaining game of two halves. Preston loooked like they were cruising to a comfortable win, until we came more into it second half to level at 2-2 in injury time. Preston fans must be breathing a sigh of relief after us nearly winning this on penalties. Our goalkeeper scores but Alessandra misses, we should have wrapped this up when we had the opportunity. Full credit to Jim Bentley by his team talk at half time as by the chances & how we came back showed what a good manager we have got & who will go on to better things if he keeps that up. If this had been Sammy we would have given up at half time & lost heavily, but Jim has a different way of thinking which proved he has potential to be a top manager soon. Good attendance tonight seen it was the a Tuesday night match. Good luck in next round but play like that again & your luck may run out.
Evening Curtis where have you been, have been waiting for you to post for about a week.. Cup ties cant beat them can you.. anything can happen and usualy does, as it did tonight. Not there obviously but from the minute by minute report Northend could have scored a hat full in the first half, and got punished for not doing so in the second. A great fightback by the shrimps and they could have a very good season ahead of them, Bentley is obviously doing a very good job so fingers crossed that it all ends in glory and you get promoted. Best of luck for the remainder of the season and thanks for your thoughts on tonight's game...
Evening, Flyingplumber. We just shaded it on chances on target 12-10. I reckon if this had not gone to penalties we could have gone on to win this in extra time. I don't think penalties is a good way to go out of any competition without extra time. Shame some morans had to spoil it at the end by invading the pitch because they didn't make the game all ticket. Considering we are one of Preston's rivals now after our 2007 win in the carling cup you would have thought we would have prepared for this by making it all ticket. Sorry I have not been on but this board because it is getting worse with less & less fans joining in the debate even without the WUM from Blackpool. I think the mods need to go round each football forum & recruit more members otherwise the board will get worse with less & less people coming on to join in the debate.
It is a little surprising that the game wasn't made all ticket, Morecambe is a popular away fixture for Northend fans and with both teams having made a good start to the season it was always going to be well attended. Yep you always get some who spoil things like invading the pitch etc. No reason to react in such a way but that's football unfortunately. As you point out penalties should be the last things used to get a result, nothing wrong in playing extra time after a draw. Penalties are not a satisfying way of getting a result. Have to admit that I am beginning to wonder about what is the point of using this forum, you get many views but very few posting their comments. Surely some of those reading the threads/comments have something to comment on whether they agree or disagree. Seriously considering packing it all in to be honest, how I wish 606 was still around... What forum are you using Curtis ????. Enjoy your football...
Morning Flyingplumber. I don't go on any site apart from this one now. I do read the shrimpsvoices forum but tend to keep away due to a few who tend to spoil it with other fans views & the state of the peoples grammer which is childish. I did however go on the football forum but got thrown off due to reporting some problem to the moderator in return he didn't have the guts to let me explain & just threw me off without a warning. This forum may be quiet but at least it is one of the better forums with a friendly debate most times. I just think the mods need to get their finger out & attract more fans by mentioning us on most football forums, that way we will get a few more to join in the debate. I hate being the only Morecambe fan on this forum. I wonder if the FA will step in after last night were Barry Roche had missles thrown at him from a few chavs in the Preston away end. Shame really as many Preston fans were well behaved & they could not believe that a few morans had to spoil it for the club. Our club need to learn from this if we are to go up next year. Many a team will be bringing a good following in league one. I think if we play like that we have a very good chance of getting promotion.
You got thrown off the football forum for having words with the mods ????......most unlike you Curtis....If they cant get on with Curtis it's time they gave up.. Our board moderator has sort of disappeared so no problems on this board with the mods.. I have had a look at other forums (except for Pebble) and have found this one to be the best as far as I am concerned, I think that the time is coming when I am the only Northender posting on here... We might have to join forces and you can tell me all about the Shrimps and I can tell you all about the Lilywhites.. Didn't know that some fans had been letting themselves and the rest of the fans down behind the goal, makes me sick to be honest and gives the club and fans a bad name. Strikes me it's a good job that Northend won by the sound of things.
This was a reasonable game and we scraped home.....just. Curtis, you are right, there were several things thrown at Roache including a bottle, this is just not on and I hope the thrower is on CCTV. Roache and the north ends fans had a good bit of banter last night, then the odd idiot spoils it. However, with north ends fans piled up behind his goal there was no way the pens were going to take place at that end.......shot themselves in the foot really. We really do need to buck up when it comes to defending a lead. Browned off so to speak about the blades game, I time my holiday to maximise my season ticket and now the new date falls in with my hol...will i get a refund will i *****
Afternoon markos .. This inability to defend a lead is becoming a habit and wont have gone unnoticed by the other clubs in our Div or outside of our division. As Brown has stated two goals up away from home should be enough to see you through, but apparently not in Northends's case. All the team have to defend when we are defending starting from the front, not sure that is happening but I still maintain the midfield is the main problem. Ashbee is a ball winner but is unfit and in the twilight of his career and can not cover the ground as he used to be able to. Alexander is NOT a ball winner and even though doing well in other areas of his game is not the answer to this problem. neither Coutts or Nic are ball winners either so the back four are not getting the protection they should be getting. I am beginning to sound like a stuck gramophone record as I say much the same every week, but the problem has not been addressed so far and needs to be. Over to you Phil the problem needs sorting out. Pity about missing the Blades game marcos and NO you wont be getting a 8888888 re fund...
