http://www.buckinghamshireadvertise...-patience-the-key-this-summer-82398-28731030/ Interesting comments from Waddock. Now, it is only May of course, and the playoffs haven't yet finished. But after the summer of 09 I think it's perfectly understandable for Wycombe fans to worry when out of contract players have not yet committed to the club, the current squad of contracted players looks very thin (2 central midfielders for example), and we are being told that 'patience is the key'. All of these things suggest to me that the budget is either lower, or once again has not yet been agreed upon. Where have we heard that before? Don't get me wrong, I'll be happy with survival next season, but this squad needs some work for it to be achieved. The summer of 09 should have taught everyone that at Wycombe Wanderers, it's never clear what lies around the corner.... Thoughts?
A repeat of 09 is on the cards JS - but not in the way you say. I am not sure if it was you or someone else who last season at this point 'wtf, we haven't got any one in yet and we need to make sure we do' and got all panicky. Now, there's no need to panic. As you said in your post, the play offs haven't even finished yet, and that for one things counts out any players from any of those teams that are involved (eg Scott Donnelly). I'd rather be patient now than do what Poxford have done - they've signed about 5 players in the last two days, now fair enough they might have had their eyes on them for a good few weeks now - but they've known they weren't going up for quite a few weeks. Its only been two weeks since we knew we were promoted - throw into that the SUnday afterwards and it's less than that. Hard to sign players in that time I think you'll agree. HOWEVER, having said all that, it is worrying that the likes of Leon and co haven't signed contracts yet, but for once (and this is rare) I'm not blaming Hayes for that, I don't think Leon and Wadds have seen eye to eye for quite a while now for whatever reason and that may be why he won't sign... but he still might. There's plenty of time for this transfer merry go round to kick in yet and I think we'll be seeing some arrivals within the next week or so. Fingers crossed anyway. Whatever happens I have full faith in Wadds and the players we have at the moment... we'd just like a few more like that please!
Jock - I only joined 606 in June 2009, so that wouldn't have been me. I would think that there would have been some planning done for next season in the final few weeks of last, and yes that would include assessing potential transfer targets. I cannot imagine this not happening in some shape or form, even if we were in the midst of a promotion challenge. The Leon Johnson issue is unique in a sense, yes, but what of the other players yet to sign contracts, one of whom is Bloomfield, our longest serving player, considered to be our most loyal by many? It's not so much the lack of signings so far, I wouldn't expect a glut of new arrivals at this stage, it's more Waddock's words which concern me, because they remind me of 09. Time will tell though, I suppose. What is certain is that I'd trust Waddock with the signings he makes as he seems to be a good judge of a useful player.
dont panic lads the wadfather will sort it out new signings will arrive soon but i fear we will lose leon unless we offer him a 2 year deal and better money.
Yeah, let's see what happens. Long way to go yet. You might be right, there should have been planning at the latter stages of the season, but who are we to say there hasn't been? There's only so much they can do, if the players are mulling over their options then our hands are tied, and I fear in this day and age where agents actually run the game then the clubs will always play second fiddle. It's wrong, but that's the way it is. I do think he's biding his time for the right players though. Chris Wilder at Oxford has signed five players in quick succession, I'm yet to see how well they do but I would have been surprised if we had done that. As for Bloomfield, I might get a bit castigated for this as I know he's a fans' favourite, and he's probably the only remaining player still there from when I last actually saw Wycombe live. On top of that, he's great. But, in the cold light of day, he didn't have the best of times last time in League 1. He's a great servant and his blood is light and dark blue, and I think he'll always be welcome at Wycombe, but I don't think he's key to our plans. If he signs then he'll play a part next season, if he doesn't, well, then I don't think it will have a huge bearing on where we finish in the league. If I had a choice between Donnelly or Bloomfield signing, I know who I would pick.
