http://www.twtd.co.uk/news.php?storyid=19990&title=jewell_admits_contract_concerns Who said when he arrived last year that it was a disgrace to have so many players out of contract at the end of the season? Now look where we are again this year!
I agree with everything he says and have said the same thing several times over the last few months. We dont want most of these players at the club and moan constantly about them but you still moan when they dont get offered new contracts. He has offered Carson, Hyam & Murray new deals and I am very happy about that but I cant think of 1 experienced players we have that should be offered a new contract based on this seasons performances. If you cant sell them, you dont want them to walk away yet you dont want them to play for us what magical 4th option is there because I cant see 1.
You are missing the point Tractorbhoy! In days gone by we used to SELL players that were surplus to requirements before their contracts ran out! In case you had forgotten that's how this club used to stay afloat! I have no objection to some of this players leaving but why let them go for nothing! Marcus Evans maybe a successful businessman but I cant see how when his philosophy seems to be pay top dollar and let go for nothing! A prime example is Leadtwats who we spunked £2 Million on and now might lose for nothing! If I was Jewell I would have cut my losses and got rid last summer.
But who would want to pay a transfer fee for (most of) the shower of ****e we have on our books anyway..? It will probably be all we can do to give some of them away, won't it.?
No I get the point totally and I would agree with you IF we had anyone worth selling. Normally to SELL someone you need to IMPRESS them by PERFORMING. If you tried to sell a 15 year old escort, bad paintwork, scratched, dented, 4 different coloured doors - would anyone pay you £1000 for it - NO BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T BE WORTH IT - If nobody bought it from you, would you then invest another years in new tax, insurance, MOT and hope somebody would give you money within the next 12months or would you just scrap it? Take the same approach to our team Would you pay £500k for Leadbitter who has been poor since we signed him, is probably on a very decent wage, and has shown no signs of promise? NO, so why would you offer him a new deal, again on decent money just to tie him to the club? If we had players who performed then I would be spitting feathers at the current situation but I have done nothing but moan about 95% of them all season so quite frankly I couldnt care less if they walked away. On top of that unless we get rid, given our curent wage bill is 98% of our income, then we cant get new players in Letting them walk away is probably the best option we have available Sad but true IMO
I have to agree with you tractorbhoy on this one. It was much more infuriating last season because the regime had been in place for a while and it seemed to me took a decision to purposefully run the players contracts down, which was ridiculous particularly in the case of McAuley who was brilliant for us last season. We rejected a bid for him in the summer yet didn't offer him a new contract until it was too late. We've offered the younger players contracts quite rightly and I believe the correct length of contract aswell. But alot of the other players we have atm I hope won't be here next season and I think probably PJ thinks that aswell that is if he can get suitable replacements in. I think that is the only reason PJ offered Delaney a contract last season because he wasn't sure we would be able to get the replacements in, which we haven't. Scotland is the only player atm who really deserves to be offered another contract.
In the summer I would have been quite happy to kick Scotland out of the door, now hes the only striker at the club that I actually rate! Everyone was over the moon with excitement that Chopra was here, I dont see many signs of joy about it currently. Things change quickly. I have never rated Leadbitter but others have and I assume Jewell was 1 that during his period in charge last season saw something positive in his play but he has yet to fulfill his 'potential' this season. Its a difficult one to call but I would be more happy to let him leave in the summer, rather than offering him a longer deal last summer. Ideally we would have taken Portsmouths money but I dont think anyone was expecting him to be totally useless this season and with the other signings/ departures then I would imagine that some stability seemed a good idea.
just looked at my finances and have come to the conclusion that letting players go for no fee makes absolutely no difference to me, if evans is happy to lose a tiny bit of his wedge its up to him. he seems to be doing half decent for himself so i won't offer him any financial advice at present.
I'm not with you at all on this one Warky. it's nice to see some decisive action. Fees are neither here nor there. We'll have saved nearly half a million in wages by letting Priskin go to play in Russia and Ingirmarsson never would've commanded any kind of fee.
Hamps whilst I'm with you atm and don't think its actually a bad thing about the contract situations, I would imagine we would have paid both Priskin and Ingirmarsson the rest of their contract up!!
I am not so sure we would have, especially with Tamas, it looks as if he already has a move sorted so a conversation may have been had along the lines of " I don't wanna be here, you don't want me here so lets just call it a day"?
