MARTIN O’NEILL is weighing up a summer move for Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand.
O’Neill watched the 22-year-old 10 days ago when he visited Stamford Bridge to see Chelsea’s game against Newcastle United.
And the England Under-21 international is on his shopping list, as he looks to bring in a specialist left-back to fill a position that has proved problematic for Sunderland in recent seasons.
Kieran Richardson has played left-back for much of the current campaign but he prefers to operate in midfield and could be on his way out of Wearside in the summer in any case, with newly-promoted Reading understood to have him in their sights.
Jack Colback can also play left-back, but O’Neill believes he is best-suited to a central midfield role.
O’Neill brought in specialist left-back Wayne Bridge on loan in January, but he has barely figured and will return to Manchester City at the end of the season.

I really like this lad and think he would be a class signing, the first I seen of him was at the Under 21 Euro's last summer and I thought him and Kyle Walker as the full backs were the only positives to come out of the tournament from an English point of view. He is a modern day full back that likes to get up and down the wing and at the age of 22 he certainly has time on his side. Would be very pleased with this signing, a much better option that the likes of Bridge or Warnock.

For me with counter attacking play you obviously need pace all over the pitch and full backs are becoming a big part of the game now as they get up and down the line. This lad would fit perfectly into MoN's counter attacking style, the lad is an athlete and as well as being a decent defender would certainly add something going forward as well.

Dont know anything about the lad, How much would he cost? If he was good what would his wages be, as for bridge going back to Manchester, no loss in my mind.

In my opinion the lad is a very good player and better than Gibbs at Arsenal IMO. He is only young and I think it will be hard to get him on a permanent deal as I think Chelsea see him as Cole's long time replacement.

IF the lad is available he is worth upto 6m IMO
