http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ic-linked-Manchester-United-City-Chelsea.html Real Madrid flop Luka Modric is reportedly considering a swift switch back to England after failing to light up La Liga. The former Tottenham midfielder was voted the worst Spanish signing of the season last month having scored just once since his £33million summer move. And the Premier Leagueâs top clubs are on red alert should he decide to cut his stay in the Spanish capital short, reports the Sunday Mirror. Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United are all thought to be monitoring the 27-year-oldâs situation with the European champions eyeing him as a replacement for Frank Lampard. The England midfielder looks set to leave Stamford Bridge when his contract expires at the end of the season. City boss Roberto Mancini has previously expressed his admiration for Modric and while the Croatian is unlikely to move in the January transfer window, he could leave the Bernabeu in summer. Ahead of Madridâs clash with Real Sociedad tonight, he has started just eight games for Jose Mourinhoâs side. Mourinho would be loath to give up on Modric, who Real had tracked for months before finally making the big money swoop. But the Croatia playmaker has struggled to force his way into the Portuguese manager's plans after an impressive debut. The likes of Xabi Alonso and Mesut Ozil have kept the Croatian out in the cold. Along with former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song, who moved to Barcelona in the summer, Modric was voted the worst signing of the season by readers of Spanish daily newspaper Marca. Modric managed to gain 32.2. per cent of the vote, having scored just one goal in 19 games for Real. Speaking to Sportske.net, Modric said: 'This is Real Madrid, I know the huge media pressure on transfers. 'I'm not looking for an alibi, I'm not that guy, but it's very demanding to adjust to a huge club like Real Madrid. 'I have had a number of solid performances, I failed in some but overall I proved I can offer something.'
Sounds like random media speculation to me. It looks likely that there'll be a different manager at Real in the summer, so talk about virtually any of their players leaving seems premature, at best. Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me to see him being used as bait when they come in for Bale, as they've made it perfectly clear that they're going to. Given the way that things went dramatically south with Levy and the Croatian/his agent/anyone he's ever met I can't see it happening, but I can see him being offered.
I felt his move was a mistake as it will be for Utd City or the Chavs. He's Spurs and he should have stayed. I bet he flops wherever he goes now.
I think Abramovich will go for him, just to stick 2 fingers up at levy, even though they've got so much talent in midfield already. If he's going to come back it should be to united if he wants to "win things". He'd slot nicely into their midfield. Mind you, I'd find it extremely funny if he joined the circus at chelsea. As for Modric coming back to us... I wouldn't say no, but I'd rather we went for someone else. We've got a better player in Dembele IMO (although different). Anyway, more importantly, hopefully this will make Bale realise that the grass isn't greener and perhaps it's worth sticking around and seeing how the project at Tottenham comes along.
Serves him right for getting too big for his boots and thinking he was better than the club. Although I'm glad we sold him abroad and not to a domestic rival, I felt all along he wouldn't cut it at Madrid. The players they have in his positions are world class and I was surprised Mourinho was so desperate to get him when he has the likes of Xabi Alonso in the DM/CM position and Mesut Ozil in the CAM position. It was never going to work out like I think Luka wanted and he's only got himself to blame. As for him coming back to England, unless it's to us I hope he doesn't. Regardless of how much he pissed me off and the fact he's flopped at Madrid, well all know too well of his qualities and if he joins City/ Utd/ Chelsea it'll strengthen them immensely. It'd be hard to accept him back here at Spurs (hypothetically speaking of course, I doubt Madrid will let him go to be honest) but I'd rather he come here instead of the others if he does indeed come back to England.
I can just see Modric going to United to replace Scholes, after all we did to prevent him going to a PL rival, I really wouldn't put it past SAF to give us it back with bells on over Zeki Fryers.
Does anyone know the ins and outs of the deal that we got for Modric? At £33m, did Madrid pay that all in one lump sum? Have they got installments in place? Is some of it performance related? If it's the latter then we could actually lose out on a fair bit of money, right?
i don't think Modric will go anywhere for a while if a new manager, takes over until he's had a chance to see the squad, plus Alonso is'nt getting any younger
about 3 weeks ago, I read somewhere that we only had £10m in the first instance. I don't know if any other installments have been made since, or whether the £10 mill was even true to be honest. they'll probably act like children and say "naaa he's rubbish... we're not giving you the rest".
He was a target, but time has moved on. He's too old to have any re-sale value so even £20-25M would be too much to pay now. Giggs, Scholes and Carrick all need replacing in the next 2-3 years. Younger players will be the only realistic option or a Bosman. Fortunately, Cleverley is improving and Powell looks to have a future. Any buys will be emerging players in the 21-24 year old bracket. And Utd's priority is a defensive midfielder anyway if big money is to be sent..
You did buy van Persie, who's 29, for £24m, though that's money well spent in my opinion. Modric is 27 which is usually where a midfielder is at his best. Personally I think he'd make a huge difference to your team so I hope the Glazers and Fergie share your opinion.
It always surprises me how much hype plays a part in football when clubs buy new players. How many times players 'appear' from no where and become 'stars' simply to fade back to the real 'mortal' level that they really are. Modric is a very good player and after a slow start did well at Spurs but is he a step up from say Dembele? IMO I'm glad to believe he is not, the difference perhaps was that Dembele played for less 'fashionable' Fulham and was therefore not hyped so highly. In recent times we have seen Liverpool's Andy Carrol hyped to the extent that they spent 35 million on him. Darren Bent has several times been bought for huge fees way above his true worth. Older posters will remember Peter Marinello (The New George Best!) ; I won't mention Bentley, hmm! I just did!
"Have they got installments in place?" What, the mighty Madrid brought Modric via DFS ?? And you can bet there are Levy clauses about selling back ratboy to a PL club.
BTW I hope SoS and Roo are correct in their assessments of our impending transfers, They are our transfer window gurus and both must spend some time trawling the net to bring us the 'news'. Right or not you guys turn what can be a frustrating period into a very entertaining time. I think you both deserve a round of applause for your contribution to the board.
