does anyone know how MLS ownership works, apparenlty david beckham wants to own his own mls club.
my understanding was that the MLS owns the club and then the clubs are franchised out to seperate owners, i dont really get the whole draft thing and non domestic football just confuses me, there is no relagation or promotion so do new clubs buy there way in? does any one know whats going on over there becuase our game could become like thiers in the future.

does seem odd but having a quick read up on it i get the impression all the owners are under one roof sort of thing and basically the mls is just like a club within itself.. i think people basically would buy someones share of the mls franchise and then be allocated a club dependent on the investment.

its apparently to keep the mls alive, probably due to it not being hugely popular. but apparently soon people will be allowed to buy a club off the mls and take into independent ownership

thinking about it, its a pretty good idea to start off a league. we dont really think about it as we have had football for so long its natural for us to have a league. but everything needs a beginning

I really dont get the point of a league with no relegation/promotion. Imagine how **** the PL would be if it was like that.

You really have to remember the MLS is a baby.. its younger than most posters on here only been around since 96.

basically imagine the premier league teams then all the other clubs are not properly established and are just pub teams and sunday league teams. im pretty sure when the league gets more backing and money then more teams will be founded and it will gradually move into a more familiar format.

there are other leagues but they are all fractured and under different associations... its going to take time and if they are serious about football they will probably all merge into one association

Wasn't there something in his contract about him owning an MLS team and that was part of the reason he moved out there in the first place? Were rumours he was going to start his own team up.

@iwantcurlyhair2 on twitter recently became an owner of San Diego, the team that Warren Barton manages. When he text me to tell me I thought it was just him, turns out there is over 20 of them, fair play for putting money in though.

The league owns the teams, and the team owners have shares in the league. For there to be a 'new' team, the league has to create expansion franchises: either to replace defunct teams, if needed; or to start teams in places where there aren't any. But it's really up to the league whether or not that happens, and the existing owners are usually against that sort of thing, since it 'dilutes' the value of their shares.

The MLS league system is really modeled more after other big American sports: NFL, MLB. etc. rather what people are used to in Europe, so I doubt it will change unless FIFA puts pressure on it to change. Otherwise, I can't see the American owners going for any change because introducing a proper league system would instantly make their clubs worth less.

As for Beckham owning a franchise, as far as I know, he's supposed to get a discounted price on a franchise at the end of his playing career; but since he's still playing for galaxy - he's expected to re-sign for them for next season - it's all a while off and up in the air. Anything could happen.
