Missed an opportunity...

?

Where are you looking in terms of this season after these last two games?

  1. Still looking up at Europe...

  2. Now looking down at the relegation 'dogfight'...

  3. Looking no further than 8th-12th...

...after Liverpool were beaten, Sunderland were beaten meaning Newcastle had the opportunity to go 6th two weeks ago but could only manage a disappointing draw at home to Bolton. A frustrating defeat to Everton this weekend followed, with Liverpool getting a win, Bolton getting a win and Sunderland scraping a draw, it has left us 6 points from Europe and 6 points from the relegation zone once more.

Before these two past weekends we were buoyed about the opportunity to nick a spot in Europe for next season. Now we find ourselves looking over our shoulders. To add insult to injury, our next game is against Stoke(a) and we've not had much to shout about down there in recent years and we've done nothing against the more physical sides this season. If Stoke win they go level on points with us!!

Everton, currently level on points with Newcastle now, have a game in-hand at home to Birmingham on Wednesday, a win for either side would be disheartening for Newcastle!I'm also growing concerned that Wolves, West Brom and West Ham have all hit a decent run of form.

I keep reminding myself that we have some quality players in Barton, Ireland, Ben Arfa and Gosling returning soon and Enrique should be in-line to start against Stoke too! But I can't help but look below us. Everytime this season when it's looked good for us, we throw in a dreadful performance or get some terrible luck.

Loking at mid table. I never thought we were in serious contention for Europe, especially not after the CC final but in fairness to us we were unlucky against Bolton and came up against a brilliantly performing Everton. With the games we've got left I'm confident we can see this season through.

I'm looking down at the relegation fight if I'm honest as it's best that we do, but reckon we will finish around 8-12th <ok>

Put 8th-12th. Would be disappointed if we ended up near the scrap zone considering where we are now. I know theres not a lot of points in it, but..

This, I hink we've been a lot better than the teams below 12th throughout the season.

What's really cost us was the games against lower teams at the beginning of the season. We beat/draw against Blackpool and West Brom etc. we're in a better position.

Voted for 8th to 12th. Europe's probably beyond us now and I'd be disappointed if we finished any lower than that

Thought 13/14 before the season started so anything above that is a bonus for me. Had a good season so far but if we keep playing the way we did on Saturday it could all fall down around our ears.

If only we'd managed to win at home on Saturday everything would have been smelling of roses.

After the previous pivotal game where not much changed and this recent pivotal game where a lot changed I can't see us reaching a Europa slot now.

Had the chance and blew it so it's time to just retain focus on a top 10 finish and I see 7th as the highest we'll finish this season if all goes right.

Top 10 has to be the aim though. Maybe we can get into the infamous* Top 9!!

People need to stop whinging about a 'relegation fight'. We won't end up anywhere near the relegation zone. The teams down there are down there because they've been playing crap. People act like they've suddenly going to all start playing well while we slide down the table.

Anyway, I'd be utterly amazed if we get a Europa spot, but you never know. If we win one of our next games whilst teams like Bolton and Sunderland lose, then we'll almost be back to where we were before. You just never know what's going to happen.

As for me, I'm aiming for a top 10 finish and I'll be delighted with that.

Yes exactly, have BEEN playing crap, now Wolves, West Ham and West Brom have hit some form whereas Newcastle have been playing OK and dropping or scraping draws recently. We are equal distance from a great season and a rubbish one, we need to stop dropping silly points and start building on taking the lead in games!

If we finished in the top 10 I would be absolutely over the moon...As it is, a finish as low as 14th/15th, considering injuries/sales and a guarantee that we'll be strengthening in the summer, wouldn't be a disaster. It'll simply be a mile stone to aim to surpass next season!

What are the chances of those three teams (and the others down there) suddenly hitting a run of form to push them up into the top 10 whilst Newcastle suddenly start losing every game and slide into the bottom 3? Almost nil.

Every single team is going to have their up's and down's this season. Just like we are. Thankfully, we have a number of favourable games and a number of key players returning from injury. We're in a better position than most.

I think that if we finish in the top 12 we would have had a really good season. (far better than most of us expected)

We have had some good wins against Villa, West Ham and Arsenal, some disappointing defeats, and of course lets not forget the total humiliation of our dirty neighbours. So I think that, provided we don't collapse in the next few weeks, we have done well this season.

The real test will come next season after Pardew has (hopefully) been given funds to strenghten the squad.

I still think we can finish in Europe. We are on a good run and Saturday was just a bad day at the office. With Shola, Ireland, Barton and HBA all coming back in the next few weeks I think we can finish strongly. We've only got 3 really hard games (ManUre, Chelski, Bin Dippers) in my opinion and we've shown we can mix it with the big boys, especially away from home.
