The blessed Adel's surname was widely mispronounced as TARRA-BAT. Several people around me call Konchesky KANCHELSKIS and one in particular calls Luongo LULLONGO. Any others?
Phil Jagielka on Soccer Saturday yesterday pronounced his own name as YAGELKA. Why haven't commentators ever asked him? Or perhaps they have and decided he was wrong.
Interestingly there are several players and coaches who have their names mispronounced in the same way: Barton, Redknapp, Bosingwa, Sean Wright Phillips - all pronounced 'feckless ****er'. It's uncanny.
I had a mate who always used to refer to Leroy 'Rozzer-er' - probably harder to say incorrectly! I always refer to our phantom player - the walking red card - as 'Dear Kitey' - never really known if this is correct or not. And Karl Henry ironically as Karl 'On Ree' - though smiled when I heard the commentator at Arsenal last season do the same with no pun intended. Our own scoreboard at the match vs Portsmouth a few years ago missed off a crucial last letter - spelling out Danny ****t. The best ever though was an away match for Coventry many years ago - when the announcer was clearly trying to read some bad handwriting. He announced Peter Nlovu as Peter Uduluvu.
Not sure I will get this across correctly! In the very early '60's Manure signed a player from Burnley who informed Kenneth Wolstenholme that his name should be pronounced Conn- o-ly. Kenneth announced this, followed by "he is wrong", It is Conn-el-ly! And who did the public believe & follow?
Terry I didn't realise that twitter was around in Ken Wolstenholme's day...... I'll get my coat......
