I know the announcer said minutes silence but it turned into applause. I took the silence option but I do prefer the applause. What did anyone else think to that? Was it wrong to applaud?

It was disgraceful to applaud. What the **** is there to applaud about 96 innocent people dying young in a tragedy?

I think a lot started applauding because there were stupid drunk people making a fair but of noise.

It was supposed to be a minutes silence but turned very quickly into applause. I personally didn't join in the applause as I preferred to stand quietly and remember the 96 who died just going to a football match. It seems it's quite difficult for some to stand in silence for more than a few seconds.

I read on the blades forum that a load of their pissed up day trippers tried to start the shoreham boys song at the start of the silence.

It was applause for the Arsenal Semi too, so probably just carried over.

It was the flaskers clapping, in protest at having to stand up. They then spent the next 90 minutes telling every ****er to shut up & sit down.

    Agreed.

For 'Jock' Davidson however if an applause breaks out it might be more acceptable. Applauding his outstanding never to be bettered contribution to the club. I certainly wouldnt be as angry as I was on Sunday if people chose to applaud.

    I stood in silence.

In Moore Spice pre-game, the minutes' silence before the Liverpool-Man City game was impeccably observed.

If a minutes silence has been requested it'd be just as disrespectful.

Having an applause is a fairly recent thing it used to always be silence. I'm sure it came about in a spontaneous manner at a requested silence recently - maybe last 10 years (cannot remember when) but since that time we've had a number of requested applauses so some people must have liked the idea of an applause.

Fair comment though if a silence is requested then a silence should be observed.

I thought it was disrespectful. I thought the applause was started by the Sheffield United supporters and then spread. I didn't clap but stood in silence.

Wrong, even if it was just to cover the poor behaviour of others.

Didn't it start with the death of George Best? I can't recall any applause prior. The club and local media should make it very clear what is being requested, and reiterated very clearly prior to the whistle being blown on Sunday.

Applause to celebrate the life of an individual (such as Best for example) is one thing.

Applause for the anniversary of a tragedy like Hillsborough is ignorant at best and downright offensive at worst.

I thought the applause was misguided. I stood in silence as most did around me, and to be honest I got a bit upset at the fact that people were applauding.

    DISGRACEFUL.

How anyone can applaud what happened at Hillsborough to the ""96"" beggars belief. They deserved silence and i stood in silence.

This sunday for the Arsenal home PL game i shall applaud as that is a celebration of a Hull City legend who reached 81 years of age. That is the difference between when to applaud and when to remain silent.

You are correct but one was 67 years old. The youngest was Steven Gerrard's cousin who was 10. But your post is spot on.
