Minnows give Pardew something to Fink about.

    Chemnitzer FC 1 Newcastle 0

United began their pre-season campaign with a defeat on Friday evening in the city of Chemnitz at their Gellert Stadium.

The game kicked off six minutes late with Newcastle wearing their new home kit.

The home side took an early lead after just nine minutes when Anton Fink swept the ball past Rob Elliot from the edge of the box after a Chemnitzer move down the right channel.

Three minutes later Elliot palmed away a goalbound header from a free-kick, as the home side threatened again.

United's first chance came in the 22nd minute when some trickery from Sam Ameobi played in Dan Gosling but the flag went up before his shot hit the post.

Ameobi had the ball in the net after 36 minutes when the ball fell to him from a Tyalor free-kick but the flag was raised again.

Our next attack was our best move so far when James Tavernier deep cross from the right fell to Gosling and his rising first time effort was tipped over.

Next to go close was Haris Vuckic when his smart shot was heading for the top corner but the home keeper tipped it behind.

United emerged after the break unchanged.

Romain Amalfitano sent over a corner in the 58th minute that Ameobi headed just over as the visitors tried to get back on terms.

It was almost all-square on the hour when the Chemnitzer 'keeper missed a backpass and had to scamper back and hack the ball off the line.

A minute later some good work down the left by Ameobi and Vuckic set up Gosling and his goalbound shot deflected just wide.

The 65th minute saw United make a quadruple substitution with the Ameobi brothers linking up front and two minutes later the younger of the two was booked for what looked like dissent.

With just over 15 minutes remaining, Demba Ba and Jonas Gutierrez replaced Sam Ameobi and Obertan but neither could inspire United to get a late leveller.

Team: Elliot, Williamson, Perch, Gosling, Ryan Taylor (Santon 65), Amalfitano, Obertan (Gutierrez 74), Sam Ameobi (Ba 74), Vuckic (Shola Ameobi 65), Tavernier (Simpson 65), Abeid (Bigirimana 65).
    Subs: Harper.

    Booked: Sam Ameobi

A decent report on the game from NUFC.com

    Surely Perch trumps a Minnow?

Anway, good to see some of the fringe players / younger lads get a run out, as we'll need a few of them this season. We have a terrible record for poor pre-season results, so I'm not paying attention to the scoreline. The boys will come good once the season starts for proper. I can feel it in the Force.
