Is this current gap in terms of places between us and the Mackems the biggest gap in living memory? My feelings is that it is.
Guessing it was a bit bigger in 87/88 (within my living memory anyway) They finished top of the old 3rd Division and we were 8th in the 1st. That was a gap of 36 places - might have been bigger during that season, but can't be arsed to check...
1987/88 was the season Sunderland were in Division 3. Incidentally a Division which technically doesn't exist anymore. Their lowest position was 12th that season on the 26/09/1987. Sadly it didn't last that long but who knows what next season may bring. At that date we were 18th in Division 1. Meaning they were 38 places below us on the 26/09/1987. Think that may qualify as the biggest gap between us ever.
Given that a train platform has more footballing nous than Relegrayson, I shall certainly be minding the gap!
Biggest in living memory? My feeling is that it isn't even the biggest it's been this season. We were 4th after 5 games and Sunderland (having played 7-8 games at that point) will have been around 20-21st. What matters is where the teams finish. If I was a betting man I'd still put money on us finishing within 5 league places of each other in our respective leagues. I reckon each around 12-15th.
The mackems had better get a move on then, they can't even win a game at home never mind manage a mid-table finish I fear they will sack their manager soon and scrape a few wins while in the all-familiar honeymoon period.
They've got Burton and Bolton at home in the next couple of weeks. I honestly can't see them getting fewer than 4 points from those. If they don't though then it will be panic stations.
