I think refs are terrified of making game changing decisions because they'll be harranged for doing so. Whereas if they did put their foot down (as I think we're agreeing they should) we might see less abuse and carry on in games.

I think refs are terrified of making game changing decisions because they'll be harranged for doing so. Whereas if they did put their foot down (as I think we're agreeing they should) we might see less abuse and carry on in games.
What Oscar needs to learn is that refs are mostly not giving soft fouls but since the season started he’s continuously gone down in light challenges and we’ve given up possession. Someone should have had a word by now for him to use his strength to hold the ball up - if he gets challenged unfairly I think he get the foul.
That's one reason I think female referees would help to make players become more respectful to the officials. A bloke screaming in the face of a woman infront of thousands in the ground and millions on tele isn't a good look no matter how bad the decision.
It’s an idea but unfortunately it’s a respect thing full stop.
I believe over time it would help create a culture of not kicking off at the ref at all. If the very people that the referee is in charge of officiating openly show disrespect then that permiates through to the fans and then the media play to the gallery. For me the two most embarrassing things about football are the cringe inducing disrespect of the ref by the palyers and the championing of cheating or 'being clever' (which usually involves throwing yourself to the ground). I can't think of another sport where it's not only excused, but advocated by prominant people within the sport.
But surely if refs gave decisions for fouls where players stayed on their feet that would cut out out a lot of the swan-diving to accentuate contact in the box, no?

It’s not ballet. There’s going to be rough contact all over the pitch. It doesn’t mean it’s a foul. I’d actually go the other way and give a player a retrospective one game ban for their first offence of trying to simulate (dive for) a penalty. A two game ban for the second attempt and so on. Let’s see if they think they’ve been fouled if it means they won’t play for a month.
You can still be impeded illegally whilst staying on your feet - just never given hence they go down easily. It's 2 sides of the same coin. Agree about blatant simulation though.

Agree. He goes down looking for a foul way too often and at the same time hasn't yet worked out how to make a challenge without giving away a free kick. Hopefully he'll find that balance as he comes to terms with Championship football.
It's back to that Tetteh penalty call from earlier on in the season. People whinged that he went down easily, but there was clear proof that it was a foul
The other equally if not more embarrassing thing is grown men (and even women nowadays) giving it ****er signs & the like to players. Leads then to young kids doing the same. More than embarrassing.
