Michael Obi has not been seen or heard from since he failed to return home from work on Friday in Jos. "John Mikel Obi's father was abducted in Nigeria on Friday," SEM Group said on Twitter. The player was told before Sunday's Premier League game between Chelsea and Stoke City, but decided to play. "This is just such a shock to me," Mikel said. "I still cannot believe it. I just don't know what to do...Please just let him go he is an old man who has done no harm to anyone."

But SEM Group denied a statement from Nigerian police which claimed the figure was 20m naira (approx £80,000). "A sizeable demand has been made but, for security reasons, we are unable to release details of the amount," the company said in a statement.
