Just watching his appearance at the select committee........ Jesus, how this guy ever made a success of Sports Direct amazes me. He seems to know anything about his business, he just admitted he didn't even know how many businesses he has under the Sports Direct umbrella. I'm seriously not knocking this guy for being the owner of our nearest and dearest...but they may as well have asked the cleaner to answer questions and he would know more.
He shoots from the hip and he seems committed to changing things, fair play to him for standing there and being made a scapegoat to make politicians look like they're doing a good job 'for the people', it's ****ing bollocks. When will the politicians pull the MD's of Starbucks and Google in front of them and ask them why they think it's ok not to pay corporation tax etc?
Not sure how you mean he is committed to changing things, I have sat and watch this, up to now, he simply has not answered one direct question fully, he simply states, he doesn't know and will get back.....or the company is too big and its not his responsibility
I'm not sure why he is answerable He employs paid labour, not slaves. His staff can leave if they want to Customers don't have to shop in Sports Direct. He is aggressive with procurement and extremely thrifty with his employees, but the plan is to pass this benefit on to customers through lower pricing and making his money through good volumes
I only watched it after seeing this thread, for about 15 mins, he invited them to his warehouse, to show them how it is. He said it wasn't possible for him to go from non-web to a huge web based company and hire permanent staff, which is fair enough, he used agency workers instead. He also said though, he wants to make sure that the ideas he put forward have been implemented on the shop floor, whether he's lying or not, it was relatively convincing. Let's not forget, bad publicity isn't good for a public company, he's got no reason to ignore this **** storm and carry on neglecting staff requirements at his companies. He's not a billionaire by being an idiot.
There's method in his madness no doubt. Top 20 of the world's most valuable clubs, according to Forbes. Aside from maybe Gelsenkirchen (Schalke), they'll be the smallest city of all 20 clubs, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Milan, London, Rome, Naples.... Newcastle... they don't belong in that list man! He's done something right even with that daft club. Relegation will have an effect I'd imagine, but that could be short term.
And a woman gave birth in the toilet apparently because it would have been one of 6 strikes if she had taken a day off "sick" are some of you f**kers from a dickensian novel ffs
Maybe the politicians should answer a few questions from business people about their laws that make ruthless people thrive. After all the politicos are the employment law drafters.
At risk of pushing this into another thread most of the rights which would protect workers weren't drafted by our politicians but came through the EU. It's ok the Tory's will make life better for the average worker.
Sadly your comment seems to reflect our society today I have always thought that change could be accomplished by democratic means unfortunately big business "has the con" as they say
This is the way i look at it also. He advertises the jobs. People apply if they want to. They are not coshed over the head and bundled into a van. Then wake up handcuffed to a cheap rail of nufc relegation mugs and shirts.
where's the eu in all this? i thought they promoted employment laws that safeguarded peoples livelihoods and didn't put undue pressure on them to turn up to work on time, not ring in sick for every little thing, and force them to give birth in toilets (sic). no? must just be the remain campaign then.
Just had a look at the EU labour laws and they lay down the basic frame work but member states administer working conditions and hours whilst protecting working rights. Maybe that is why Ashley has been called in.
