Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will take a first-hand look at Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet on Saturday as he weighs up a move for a new No 1.

The Reds boss is still to be fully convinced that either David De Gea or Anders Lindegaard can establish themselves as first choice at Old Trafford and is also interested in Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic.

Ferguson’s policy of rotating his keepers this season has given both men the chance to make the position their own – but neither has seized it. And it has left the United boss
considering stepping back into the transfer market – either in January or at the end of the season.

Belgian international Mignolet is one option after his outstanding displays for Sunderland.

The 24-year-old was largely unknown when Steve Bruce signed him for £2m from St Truiden in 2010 – but he’s now considered one of the Premier League’s top keepers.

He is set to play at Old Trafford when Ferguson will be able to run the rule over him in front of 75,000 fans.

Sunderland would demand in the region of £10m for their No. 1 – but Ferguson is determined to solve what has been a problem area since Edwin van der Sar’s retirement.

He still hopes De Gea can live up to the potential that convinced him to make the Spaniard the second most expensive keeper in the world when signing him from Atletico Madrid for £18.9m last year.

The 22-year-old produced one of his best performances of the season in the 3-2 win against City last Sunday but has managed to keep only two clean sheets this term. His cause has not been helped by Ferguson’s decision to chop and change between his two keepers. But that is evidence of the manager’s own uncertainty over who should be his No. 1.

De Gea will hope his performance in the derby will be enough to earn him a sustained run in the team and the chance to convince Ferguson to keep his chequebook in his pocket.

but saying that, he wants to destroy us, so if they do will he think not worth it if they dont he may be more busy chastising his team than praising any of ours.

The other thing is, I remember Kelvin Davies having an absolute blinder at OT for us it was 0-0 and they failed to win the title because of it, it doesnt mean he was a good keeper, but 10m from him from SAF and we would have snapped his hand off.

 

Seems harsh on De Gea to me. He has made mistakes but mainly last season, I think he is a fantastic shot stopper. Still suspect on crosses but only 22. The real problem with clean sheets is not the keeper, its the woeful defending. I still think De Gea will come good.

You can ill afford to lose Mignolet though. He is getting better all the time and I only see a weakness on set pieces. He has kept you in games at times this season and I think it would be a massive blow to morale. To be honest I think O'Neill would not be at all amused if Short sanctioned a sale, Man U or not.

Begovic is the best keeper in the world and Ferguson should definitely buy him. Migs is rubbish in comparison ;-)

 

I hear this Tim Krul fella is decent. Fergie should have a look at him.

 

Like somebody has already said, they have De Gea. He has had a shaky start but still looks like he's going to be a top keeper.

 

Fergie won't buy a new keeper half way through the season, it's not worth the risk to buy him and expect him to fit straight into the side. If he's going to replace or add to our keepers then he'll do it in the summer, and with all the rumours about him meeting Pep in New York, he might not even be in charge for next season.

Good goalkeeper though.

 

We wouldn't sell our number one keeper in the middle of a scrap, in the middle of kid season.

However, his performances are bound to earn him notice around Europe and I fully expect approaches this summer for sure.

If Gordon cost us £9m, then bids starting at £12m may be listened to for Mignolet then. I would expect to get £15m plus for him tbh.

 

All the weaknesses in De Gea's game are the same in Mignolet's. Both excellent shot stoppers but both have difficulty with positional sense from set pieces.

In my honest opinion it would ruin Mig if he went to Man Utd. Bar Van Der sar its grave yard for keepers since Schmeichal retired
