A tad surprisingly it is not one of the top dogs or even Swansea, who probably have been most people’s tip, but good old Fulham who top the possession charts

No doubt there will be many who observe that these statistics hide the fact that the ’possession’ is mainly built out of sideways and backward passes. In other words, what’s the great thing about ’possession’ if it isn’t translated into goals and consequently points? Also, included in this chart there is another telling statistic and that is, Fulham are leaders in having the fewest (by quite a margin) off side decisions against them. It wouldn’t take an Einstein to work out the reason for that one!

However, interpreting the figures this way is very much in the “cup half full” camp. A more positive view would be to start with another cliché like “possession being nine-tenths…” and while you have the ball the other lot can’t score. Moreover they convey that the team is now attuned to Jol’s preferred style of play and it‘s a short next step to success.

Personally I’m on the fence - we’re half way there.

A step in the right direction, for sure.
