Okay then, defense is fairly sorted and attack well we ain't got much choice. So what do we need in midfield? Midfield: Asa Hall - CM Matt Richards - CM/LB Jon Taylor - RW Ryan Woods - ? Aaron Wildig - CM/RM Mark Wright - LW/RW - injured Luke Summerfield -CM Rob Purdie - LW/CM/RW (LB/RB) Paul Parry - LB/LW/ST David McAllister - CM/RM Stephen McGinn - AM What is the best for 442 and varying 451 combos?
I don't know about midfield, but our strikers are surplus to requirements as they are fed very little. Van Persie would struggle to score in our set up. In other words, it is not necessarily who plays in midfield but what mindset they are programmed with.
the more i look at those names the more i realize how bad some of these players are, most have had at least one or two good games, but ALL have had long spells of very mediocre performances, you would need at least four or five of the players playing at a constantly good average every match to get anywhere in this league which unfortunately isn't happening, so it doesn't really matter about the 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, what matters is getting those players playing at a better standard with more consistency .
one permutation would be this: Taylor Summerfield McGinn Parry Having a left footer (not richards) able to cross into the box offers more to our strikers than a right footed player who has to cut in.
My only thoughts about five in the middle are: There's more chance that two of them will be on form (if not we need a clear out!) By 'clogging up' the midfield with bodies we have less chance of losing matches (all 'lower' teams do it against better teams with a degree of success). Nihil illegitium carborundum!
.......oh! and that means we can change the one upfront three times in a game! Surely that would work? (barring injuries of course, just to be sensible for a few secs!)
it says something for our squad that no club has come in for anyone. hopefully the squad may improve particularly up front and the service they get.
im sure if we could sign a few players in midfield with a bit of spark about them it may bring on the rest of the lads, but im sure GT is more interested in not losing than winning games and that's a recipe for dull matches which in turn losses revenue as supporters stay away!, we should have tried to play some football against Bury as three of their lads were having a first time run out!!...as ive said in the past, nobody is going to thrash us but on the other hand we ain't going to win many either.....
Safety in league one must have been priority for GT from the boss! As we have said before 20th position at the end of match 46 would still be an achievement. It must also be said that no one making or agreeing with the prior statement should expect a glorious season. However it would just be nice to see our squad actually try to win the game by shooting at goal, the forwards did not have the opportunities provided to them and that comes from the fact that the players who started on saturday in CM were not up to it, this is highlighted by the fact that the substitutions changed how well the squad played as a whole. What changed? Richards out to the wing and Summerfield on to the other. We all know Richards is not a great winger, but he did not work in CM on Saturday so I think he needs a bit of bench warming for at least one game.
Well, as today I have a bad bout of man flu......may be watching the PNE match from the other side, I decided to do something useful for Uncle Graham then realised it would only make things worse!!!! If we have 10 midfielders then there are 252 possible combinations of picking 5 of them (if/when Wright comes back that's 462!).......so how can we expect to get the combination correct in just 46 league games. However, to make Graham's life easier there are only 210 ways of picking 4 from 10. Of course this flies in the face of my 13:29 posting advocating picking five midfielders (and hoping two of them are on form!). There is always a very high chance we pick no one on form! That's it; that's what's been happening. WE HAVEN'T A CHANCE! Literally. So I have to believe my other supposition that "By 'clogging up' the midfield with bodies we have less chance of losing matches (all 'lower' teams do it against better teams with a degree of success)." We could always play 4-6-1 'cos blind linesmen wouldn't spot it (my favourite subject!)
It seems to me that 4-1-3-1-1 would be sensible at the moment with a diamond formation in midfield as we do not have even one decent striker - let alone two. How about Mcallister sitting in front of the back for with Taylor, Mcginn and Richards the three and Hall playing in the hole behind Morgan.
Metashrew, I made a mistake and should have put in Summerfield for Richards but I stick by my diamond formation which is designed to get much more support arriving from midfield for our sole striker. I do remember Morgan playing really well for Aldershot against us as the one up front. Remember that Chelsea won the Champions League playing that way!
Exactly....Europe here we come! All we need is a stand-in manager, your diamond (or was it Di Matteo's?) and Roland to loosen the purse strings and we are as good as there. Pity we don't have a chance to get in through Wales!!!!
i wouldn't make the configuration to complected for them as they are struggling with the basics now, as far as configuration and team tactics are concerned you can nail that quite easy, but it all falls flat when you haven't got a bit of quality!!...and we haven't
Tinned Hats, whilst GHMM and myself are interested in tactics and formations there is an element of tongue in cheek! We agree that whatever formation we play there is an element of chance every time they take to the pitch. GHMM is just trying to give a mediocre bunch a better chance. Reading the other streams I think we all believe Weale, McGinn, Mac, Grandison, Summerfield and possibly Taylor are the best of an average bunch. That's about half a team! You may be more aligned with the person who said "I have a great team on paper, they're just c**p on grass! Was that another Cloughie-ism or an old Spurs manager.......someone will know, we are a very knowledgeable bunch.
