If you are driving along a busy motorway and the inside lane is rammed out with lorries, coaches and other slow-moving vehicles, is there really anything wrong with sticking to the middle lane if you keep to a solid speed of 65-70mph? That way, faster vehicles can overtake on the outside, and inside lane drivers can move out when able to.

If this new law is to be introduced, then surely drivers will be constantly weaving in and out of the inside lane because they are wary of being fined. This, in my opinion, is going to create chaos.

If you don't have the confidence to change lanes when appropriate, then don't drive on the ****ing motorway. The Highway Code couldn't be clearer; keep left and use the outer lanes to overtake.

    It's a stupid ****in law...

The motorways are ****in rammed as it is!

Time to fine the ****s driving at 50/60 on the motorway (with no traffic), increase the top speed on the motorway to 80 and apply the french/german rule for the outside lane...

Also, standard motorway sections as part of driving lessons/testing.

That may be the case for some, AR, but, as an experienced driver, I cannot see how this enforcement will make the motorways flow any better. They are **** enough as it is, let alone having the faster drivers forced into the inside lane at every opportunity.

Furthermore, are you telling me that you take your place in the inside lane after each and every overtaking manoeuvre? I find that very hard to believe.

On a quiet motorway, keep left. On a busy motorway, keep the flow going without the need for pointless lane changes.

    A typical day on a stretch of the M3 looks like this;

Inside lane, a few lorries and long stretches of ****-all.
Middle lane, clogged up with muppets looking straight ahead and travelling at exactly 70 mph
Outer lane, anyone who wants to travel at 3mph above the legal limit at any point, a handful of travelling salesmen aggressively tailgaiting, and people who've actually read the Highway Code forced to cross three lanes of traffic to overtake the dodderers in the middle lane (because to undertake them would be dangerous despite the fact that there's acres of room in the inside lane).

You can stay in the middle lane if you're overtaking, obviously. But when you're not, get back in and leave room for the people who want to overtake you. It'sreally ****ing simple, and if everyone kept to the rules the motorwayswould move a lot more smoothly.

If only that were the case with the M25.

Agreed, the mechanics of motorway driving are straight-forward. However, we have a nation of drivers who believe they are the best and, therefore, think nothing of the Highway Code. This latest change in the law will leave thousands, if not millions, making dangerous lane changes because they are unsure of the correct etiquette.

It's not a change in the law, Ponders. It's about enforcing existing laws.

A lot of the M25 has four, and in some places 5, lanes. And still the outer lanes are the busiest because people won't keep left

I understand that, AR. I meant the change in law with regards to compulsory fines, as opposed to the police's discretion. That is a good thing, certainly, but my fear is that while motorways are far from perfect, they are about to get even worse.

Less confident drivers are going to struggle.

I like to keep my indicators on switch lanes at various speeds and use a hard jerky braking technique to keep the cars behind guessing.
